Another great creative has left us.

Nikki Giovanni has died at the age of 81.

Poet Nikki Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 7, 1943. Although she grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, she and her sister returned to Knoxville each summer to visit their grandparents. Nikki graduated with honors in history from her grandfather's alma mater, Fisk University. Since 1987, she had been on the faculty at Virginia Tech, where she was a University Distinguished Professor.

Her last book - appropriately named "A Good Cry" is what we are doing today. Shedding and sharing tears.

Went to the Rothko room and the Jacob Lawrence exhibit on Toussaint L'Overture at the Phillips Collection with Solange on repeat. No teeth for the empty heads with plastic smiles and eyes that screamed,"What the hell are you doing here?!" Head nod to the few who showed a sister some humanity and a willingness to connect. I came for my medicine: I needed to extract this bottled cry, filter out the toxicity and let my ancient memory flow.
