there's two straight dudebros who review the show on YT and i just know them from the 'noah you're in the shot' meme that went viral on here. i decided to blast through their finale review cos they dragged it lmfao, and even they sincerely gasped when mike said 'friends? no, best friends'. they believed in that split second that something was gonna happen between them, like we bylers did
and it made me think on the duffers intentions with will's love for mike. the way they didnt find that friends/best friends callback cruel, and just saw it as a clever callback to s4 instead, and the way they called byler fans 'noise' read to me as bemusement and confusion rather than dislike. i think they genuinely thought all their audience would be rooting for mike and el till the end, and that nobody would root for mike and will, because mike is clearly straight (air quotes). if this is true, its a crazy misunderstanding of human nature. ofc a gay audience is gonna root for byler. ofc plenty of straights are going to too, because sexuality is not as important as compatibility and chemistry when it comes to romance in media. it makes me wonder also if finn and noah's chemistry was something they didnt expect and couldn't manage, with disastrous (for them) results.
idk. just the idea they genuinely didn't think there'd be people rooting for will to get the boy is so funny and sad to me. i mean look at the lil muffin. ofc we want him to have the world, which includes his mike
