Ogyefuo - February
We call this period, Ogyefuo which means to demarcate land for farming. Following the natural cycle and in the northern hemisphere, the season is about to turn and change which makes it favourable to farming. So this is the time you begin to prepare and prep the land hence, Ogyefuo.
The original calendar mapped the sun's yearly journey through the ecliptic. It was based on this natural cycle that determined when to grow food when to harvest and so on.
The Great Scarcity, January.
January is called Opepon which means the great scarcity. During this time and in the northern hemisphere, due to the cold, the plants are dead, animals have gone into hibernation and resources such as food become scarce hence the name great scarcity (Opepon). This is the original calendar that adhered to the natural cycle of life.
The agricultural season culminates in August or thereabout, the time of harvest. This is where Virgo originates. The eternal virgin, who keeps producing and Virgo represents the harvest season.
This is Afi. The divinity that grants us abundance during the harvest season. We celebrate with a feast during this period (why won't you? You are merely enjoying the fruits of your labour and you can only logically celebrate when there is abundance.) It is this celebration that actually became Christmas.
During Christmas in Ghana. We greet only in the name of Afi. We sing in the name of Afi.
Afi hye pa (Afi has met us well). Afi ooo Afi (Applellation). Afi ako apro (Afi has journeyed back to us).
You will meet a thousand people during Christmas in Ghana and you will hear a thousand greetings in the name of Afi (Afi hye pa). The inspiration for Virgo. Afi is the divine feminine energy that grants us a fruitful harvest and governs Friday (Fida, the day of Afi).
It should not escape you, Fida and Friday are not so dissimilar. One and the same.
