Obama Administration Eyes Regulating Green House Gas Emissions From Your Food.
The Obama administration is now targeting US agriculture and livestock in its crusade against global warming. The USDA has released a 606 page document outlying methods of sustainable development and reducing green house gasses (GHG).
The document is designed to “develop user-friendly tools for farmers, ranchers, forest landowners and other United States Department of Agriculture stakeholders to help them evaluate the GHG benefits of a wide variety of management practices.”
The USDA says the massive report will serve as a “tool” for farmers to utilize, but others argue that it is just another way for federal regulators to increase their reach over the economy. Dan Kish who is senior vice president for policy at the Institute for Energy Research said “global warming has become the Obama Nanny State’s Swiss Knife.”
“They want to beat plowshares into swords to use them against farmers across the country, just as they’re pursuing farmers for their watering holes.”
Similar attempts have been made by the Obama administration in the past that Republican lawmakers have expressed concern over. Earlier this year, the Obama administration proposed cutting dairy industry methane emissions by 25 percent by 2020.
The White House claimed this would reduce the effects of global warming but many Republicans argued that this could amount to a tax on cow flatulence (as reported previously by Misguidedchildren). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, beef and dairy cattle are the largest emitters of methane. The federal government has already funded research into why animals of the same species emit different levels of methane gas.
According to the EPA agriculture and livestock account for nine percent of greenhouse gases. South Dakota Senator John Thune wrote to Obama on behalf of Republicans saying
“It is our hope the EPA, USDA, and DOE will work with Congress and the agriculture industry to outline voluntary measures that can be taken to reduce emissions without imposing heavy-handed regulations on farms across America.”

Institutions including Harvard and Vanderbilt reportedly use hedge funds to buy land in deals that may force farmers out
Harvard and other major American universities are working through British hedge funds and European financial speculators to buy or lease vast areas of African farmland in deals, some of which may force many thousands of people off their land, according to a new study. Much of the money is said to be channelled through London-based Emergent asset management, which runs one of Africa's largest land acquisition funds, run by former JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs currency dealers. “The scale of the land deals being struck is shocking”, said Mittal. “The conversion of African small farms and forests into a natural-asset-based, high-return investment strategy can drive up food prices and increase the risks of climate change. ...“This is creating insecurity in the global food system that could be a much bigger threat to global security than terrorism. More than one billion people around the world are living with hunger. The majority of the world’s poor still depend on small farms for their livelihoods, and speculators are taking these away while promising progress that never happens.” >continue<
