IT’S HAPPENING!
The world assumes white people are naturally good, so when something bad happens it's a good person doing a bad thing. They assume Black people are naturally bad, so when something good happens it's only a matter of time before that animal's true nature rears it ugly head.
Mr. Nancy, “The Greatest Story Ever Told”, American Gods
“The Way of the Dead”
American Gods, S02E05
This episode begins with the lynching and mutilation of a Black man, and it fits in with the story.
This show has attached Shadow to lynching from the start. I read the book and I think I see where they are going but I am over it.
The confrontation between Mr. Nancy and Mr. Ibis was something I didn’t know I needed. The idea of a Black God causing the suffering of black and brown people and another Black God calling them out on it is amazing and too good for this show. I was genuinely afraid for Mr. Ibis and and afraid of Mr. Nancy.
Ricky Whittle as Willy James speaking at the funeral is the best acting he has done in the entire series. I want more of gods speaking through Shadow to give Ricky something to do.
I. DO. NOT. CARE. ABOUT. LAURA. MOON.
Can Mr. Nancy visit Baron Samedi? I want more Black Gods interacting.
Salim and the Ifrit continue to be a shining point of the series by addressing Salim’s relationship with Allah.
There is something to be said about interracial relationships between a black man and a white woman in the American Gods Universe. Willy James was murdered for looking at a white woman before she was found dead. Shadow’s ex-wife is a dead white woman. Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte (the only white Voodoo god) are death loa.
The key to this show’s success is let the other gods speak amongst themselves about the Mr. Wednesday/Mr. World conflict and let viewers see their perspective on how they must make a living in a country that doesn’t treat gods well.
“Donar the Great”
American Gods, S02E06
This is the episode that shows how the old Gods have tried to survive through the decades and asks you to feel sympathy for Mr. Wednesday.
“I will count to seven and I’m starting at four!” Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy continues to be amazing.
More Rickey Whittle as Shadow pretending to be someone else, please
No Laura Moon. Funny how the episodes without her have been the best ones.
American God S2 premieres tonight!
8PM EST, STARZ
I liked the first season and hope they kept the Coming to America vignettes and focus less on Laura Moon. I would also like more Mr. Nancy.
“The Greatest Story Ever Told”
American Gods, S02E04
I have been waiting for the Mr. Nancy, Bilquis, and Mr. Ibis funeral home scene since Mr. Nancy mentioned Cairo and I was not disappointed. Orlando Jones gives an Emmy award-winning performance. I also liked Bilquis’s restraint when it came to Ruby; I was worried. And Mr. Ibis was a good perspective to balance out the other two’s extreme views: “They all end up on my table.”
"Hello, friend.” This broke my heart. Technical Boy’s Coming to America was exactly what viewers needed to see to understand the concept of an American God. “I am literally your only friend.”
I am not sold on New Media just yet... I get what they are trying to do but it’s not coming together.
Shadow is such an unnecessary character at this point. Mr. Wednesday should have sent him to Lakeside by now. Although, I liked his interaction with Money. “Access denied.”
No Laura Moon in this episode!
This is the best episode of the series because it dared to focus on the gods and not Shadow or Laura.
sidenote: I finally have a copy of the 10th Anniversary version of the American Gods novel; “It is the best version of the story,” she says as if she read the original text.
“Moon Shadow”
American Gods, S02E08 finale
I nearly turned the tv off at the police raid scene.
Bilquis is gorgeous.
Mr. Nancy and Mr. Ibis are a great duo. I wonder if Chris Obi will return as Mr. Jacquel.
Laura Moon is in this episode. She is such a weak link.
The “Hello Friend” still gets to me. The deception was a highlight of the episode as it acknowledged the fact that religion is man-made, complete with humanity’s flaws.
I am not a fan of New Media. I see what they are trying to do but it’s not working.
We are headed to Wisconsin next season. This section of the book is very Wednesday-lite and it is Shadow as Mike Ansel. I have said before that Ricky Whittle does his best work on the show when he is not Shadow, so this next season has some promise.
“Treasure the Sun” [no spoilers]
American Gods, S02E07
I love the high voice Mr. Ibis does.
Bilquis is clearly creating her own church and I am all for it.
Shadow had something to do this week.
Laura is in this episode. She has seen the horde. I bet that comes into play next week.
