Very un-serious comic I did a few weeks ago feat. Ahab the wretched fish-creature meeting a klabautermann, or ship’s kobold. Folklore on them varies, but at least one source claims that offering any items of clothing to a naked one is very offensive! Ahab can expect a lot of loose ropes, vandalized belongings, and inexplicable falling objects in the next few weeks..

Inspired by the series of art style memes Dimetrodone has been using, I decided it was time to get over my art block and have some fun myself, featuring my three most frequently drawn characters.

ooh Ahab, you're a fine young figure of a fish... bet you've got a girl in every port, haven't you? or maybe... someone else ;)

6/10 on the uncomfortable scale.. Ahab has formed a few close friendships over the years, but has no interest in human anatomy, doesn’t like to be seen naked, is uncomfortable with most physical contact, and he fears he lacks some kind of fundamental human ability to experience love because of it. Not that he would tell this to a stranger but those “well-meaning crewmates” did finally find find Ahab a woman willing to spend a few hours in a bathtub with him, but it proved a deeply uncomfortable experience.

I did say I would post more oc stuff so here’s some old sketches of Ahab; the first and second time he saw other kuo toa. Ahab was raised by humans, and never came close enough to speak to another of his own kind until his 20’s. Their communities are small and remote, and after centuries of conflict and persecution by the land races they tend to avoid contact with all outsiders.

There are multiple reasons kuo toa seldom integrate in land race societies, and a lot of them have to do with lack of accommodation for their amphibious bodies. Their skin needs to be at least slightly damp at all times or they experience severe discomfort, and Ahab is prone to scale shedding and skin infections where clothes chafe away his mucus layer. Kuo toa are also nocturnal, with eyes that see poorly in bright light, and do not tolerate warm environments well. Ahab really only survived because he grew up on a ship, and after learning to speak common found use as go-to nightwatchman and hull scraper (he often eats the barnacles and other foulers to supplement ship rations, much of which he doesn’t digest well).

For those interested, here is my entry to that art telephone game all by itself! Was very fun to draw a bunch of sea critters in a grimy bar, im glad that was the going theme when my turn came around.

So what's Ahab's favorite weapon?

Ahab is technically a (dnd) bard, and like most bards would prefer to talk his way out of a situation than resort to violence at all. He has however honed the kuo toa’s knack for believing things into existence by “thinking very loud” until a shockwave manifests next to whatever the threat is.

A lonely little fish-creature meets a goblin. Not that young Ahab knew what a goblin was at the time, but they became good friends nonetheless. The goblin’s name is Checkermint, or “Checkers”.
