ahappytrashbin replied to your post “in what fandom is a 1:10 even remotely possible??? if i had strived...”
yeah no ive noticed that too!! thing is its kinda skewed, i think, bc every time you click on the link is a "view" right? so what if its just someone reading their favorite fic over and over again?? plus, ive read many fanfics that are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and have w a y more than the 1:10 ratio, so i try to remember that that equation is total bullshit. idk this is probably irrelevant and im very sorry
No, it very much is TOTAL BULLSHIT and we all need to keep that in mind :)
Readers reread fics over and over again (even on the day of posting!). And the ratio stops being useful the second you add another chapter because kudos are only counted once. AND the longer the fic is up, the higher the hit count goes, but you can’t tell if it’s from first time readers or rereaders.
There are so many reasons not to care about the kudos:hits ratio, but authors just want to have some kind of metric to know whether they’re doing okay, and that one at least looks like it works. Even if it’s total bunk.
(now I just need to remember this myself the next time I post a fic)
