When I was an undergrad pretty much everyone I knew hated it, but I think it's just because no one seems to know how to teach the play properly - it's a fairy tale. Ultimate wish fulfillment. And it really has that feel to it, as well.
That was exactly how I directed my Winter's Tale, magic and all. I played Paulina as if she was Leontes and Hermione's warrior sorceress. I even wore armor. It was awesome.

Nah man I totally feel that way about Hamlet. Like I absolutely love so much of the language but I can't imagine having to fit it all together because it just doesn't entirely work as a whole.
It's about two hours too long, is riddled with plot holes, and a few major characters are seriously underwritten. And then, when people perform it, they are always overly reverent. I've never seen a production of Hamlet where it didn't feel like the whole company was super aware that they were performing the GREATEST PLAY EVER. And that sucks.

this just motivated me to start seriously thinking about doing a Five Points era R+J.

Now that sounds intriguing.....
RIGHT?! Emma Thompson is easily the best part of the Branagh Much Ado, but her Benedick wasn't as good as she was. Catherine Tate's Beatrice is very good and she was excellent with David Tennant, but I just wish I could mash up the two best interpretations of those roles that I've seen.
