Askrai’s Maned Flying Squirrel  ❁ 

A miniature rodent, with a pair of front limbs, abdomen limbs, and rear limbs. The first two pairs make a pair of moveable sails, of which have impressive mobility in their sockets. The rear pair, equipped with another sail between it and the tail, acts as an anchor when not in flight. The bones are hollow, like that of birds, and the paws each have two fingers and a thumb. The first pair of hands have webbing between the fingers. Likely vestigial, this webbing serves very little purpose and does little to slow the Squirrel’s fall.  These critters feed primarily on insects, though nuts, fruits, and other sweet foliage are also a major part of their diets.  Offspring number 5-15, and reach maturity around 5 months. The total lifespan ranges anywhere from 2 to 5 years. The males usually live shorter, and their manes are thicker, longer, and darker.

Askrai’s Ratcat  ❁

Two pairs of legs to grabbing and walking, one pair for clinging to large trees that make up the majority of Ahellias Island.  The male ratcat has a colorful mane, serving three purposes - an indicator of health to potential mates, a warning indicating their venomous bite, and a pattern unique to each individual ratcat, helping members of a family identify one another. Female coloration is duller and tends to include more greys, russets, and browns in the mane. Tails of both sexes are often lost in fights, and after the first year of life, the color in the toe webbings all but disappear, leaving the blue-green skin behind. Pictured above is a male ratcat. One of the only predators on the island, the ratcat preys upon the Pygmy Coral ‘Keets, Flip Side Birds, and Flying Squirrels. They also have a sweet tooth, and in fall when the fruits fall from the canopy to the floor and rot, enjoy getting drunk on the fermented juice. When intoxicated, a ratcat’s colors get brighter.  The teeth are external, and used to chew away bark for birthing dens. These dens are only large enough for the offspring, and are not lived in. Adult ratcats do not use shelters, and often consume any provided for them. The offspring number 3-5 in an individual litter.

Pat’s Blob ❁

A large, soft bodied creature. Pat’s Blob is a predatory animal, feeding on the blood and fluid, along with the soft and easily digestible internal organs, of medium-to-large, land dwelling animals.  The young are born in the canopy, which when large enough, will drop onto prey on the forest floor, similar to ticks. The Blob gives birth to live young, which feed off of nectar until they are about a foot in diameter. They reach three foot at adult size and rarely grow larger.  A good source of uneaten carrion, this creature is an essential part of Ahellias’ ecosystem.
