The Childhood of Aileen Wuornos
Born on February 29th, 1956 to Leo Dale Pittman and Diane Wuornos, who was 15 at the time of Aileen’s birth. Aileen was abandoned with her older brother Keith at her grandparents just before she was four years old. Not too soon after the two young children moved into their grandparents home in Troy, Michigan, did they find out that Lauri, their grandfather was an abusive drunk, as was their grandmother Britta. Aileen was raised to think her grandparents were her biological parents. She found out at 12 that she was adopted by them. At 14 she fell pregnant due to sexual abuse from both grandfather and brother. She gave birth to a son, who she gave up for adoption. Awhile after, her grandmother Britta died and she got kicked out of the house by her grandfather and sent to foster homes. Throughout the rest of her teens she would go in between running away and staying at foster homes. Near the end of her adolescence, her brother Keith died from throat cancer at 21 and her grandfather Lauri committed suicide. At twenty years old Aileen Wuornos ran away to Florida, starting the path of her heinous crimes.
