i am appalled and deeply saddened that this what too many others have resorted to: using generative artificial intelligence computer programs to fill the void of actual human relationships as the inherent mess, inconvenience, and irrationality that comes with being human has been positioned as “too much friction” in our lives.

we have failed each other as a society, to the point where people who need the human connection the most, have been hurt and disappointed too much that they seek comfort and solace in a computer program that is designed to keep them coming back for more.

“AI boyfriends would never confront me on my mistakes and shortcomings like this” of course it wouldn’t. it can’t. because it doesn’t care. it can’t care — not like an actual human being would — even if it can be incredibly tough and messy to be vulnerable around others.

when i hear of people with AI romantic partners or using AI to have “conversations” based off of recordings of deceased loved ones, i feel so sad about their immense loneliness. how could we have abandoned other humans who need other humans the most?

(capitalism is an answer. we are too deep in our respective rat races that any and all tools that could give us back an ounce of precious time and energy that a capitalistic society greedily demands from all of us would be seen as a reprieve, even if it means giving up our ability to think critically and independently in the long run, at the cost of potable water, or even the life’s work of many a thinker or artist. we’ve become so hyperfocused, as a society, on output and “productivity” (whatever the fuck that even means anymore) that we think the end justifies the means when we ought to restart appreciating and honoring each and every step of the process. this economic system needs to change and it’s up to us to demand more and differently for ourselves and for humanity)
