An art related vent I guess
For the last month, I’ve seen countless posts across the net about AI and its copyright issues. Because quite frankly, the problem a lot of artists have is the fact that their work is being taken without their consent and with zero compensation. That’s not what this crazy little half-baked/post-hemiplegic migraine rant is about.
What I’m finding is that the AI subject is burying actual art posts and regulating human-made art to the waste of the algorithm. We talk about supporting artists but when artists post their work we get crickets.
The algorithm is very difficult to get a handle on (I’ve been posting my scribbles on the net since 2008 and still haven’t figured it out). So when another AI rant gets 1000+ comments it gets boosted. Artworks that don’t create the same drama (which unless it’s AI it most certainly won’t) will not get seen by the wider community. Art is simply not “rage-inducing enough”. To be honest it feels like a Sisyphus situation. Unless we support real art in a way the algorithm understands (likes, comments, shares) then we will not see actual art on our feeds. Unless we are willing to support artists, in meaningful ways instead of just complaining about artists not being supported, then all you are going to see on your feed is “Where’s the art? How do I know if this is AI? Why don’t I see artist’s work on my feed anymore?” (Literally all questions I’ve seen in the last week). I see fighting the encroachment of AI on our industry, and it’s ethics (or lack thereof) as a worthy cause. I just think we also need to boost artists' actual artwork at the same time, otherwise, it’s just going to be buried, never to be seen in favour of a hot take about Zendaya’s likeness being a popular AI prompt. Please show artists some support, like, share or comment on it. The apathetic, passive scrolling kills human art just as quickly as an AI tech bro with their shiny new toy. Who am I kidding, no one will pay attention to this either.
