“Tiny Homes”, proposta di abitazioni per giovani senzatetto nel quartiere di Bronzeville, Chicago
L'obiettivo del progetto è quello di costruire una comunità usando un design semplice ed una forma familiare per i moduli abitativi.
Queste "mini-case" sono la semplificazione della tipica abitazione statunitense: hanno il cortile d'ingresso (front yard), il giardino sul retro (backyard) e i due volumi slittati sono coperti con un tetto a due falde (questo può permettere, in futuro, di montare dei pannelli fotovoltaici).
I moduli sono distribuiti lungo i lati occidentale ed orientale del lotto in maniera tale che al centro possano trovare posto due luoghi di aggregazione: l'edificio per le attività comuni ed una piazza/campo da gioco.
Il modulo abitativo è diviso in due volumi di altezze differenti: quello più basso, verso la strada, ospita il bagno e la camera da letto mentre quello più alto ospita la zona giorno. Da questa zona più "sociale" si accede al backyard, un patio rivolto allo spazio aperto comune all'interno dell'insediamento.
Le diverse altezze, i tetti a falda ed il gioco di luci causato dai volumi slittati concorrono a movimentare i fronti e ad evitare di trovarsi in un luogo anonimo. Questa volontà è espressa anche dal fatto che il rivestimento può essere dipinto come meglio aggrada.
La struttura è in legno (con listelli di 2"x6" con interasse 24") con rivestimento di lamiera ondulata.
L'edificio comune è diviso in tre "scatole", una per ogni funzione ospitata: uffici, spazio per riunioni e lavanderia (con ingresso indipendente).

“Tiny Homes”, new solutions for youth homelessness in Bronzeville neighborhood, Chicago
The purpose of our project is to build a community by using a simple and well-known design for housing modules.
Tiny homes are the simplification of the classical american house: they have a front yard, a backyard and the two splitted volumes are covered with a pitched roof (this point allows to install, in the future, solar panels on the southwards slope).
The modules are arranged on the Eastern and Western edges of the plot so in the middle two communal spaces take place: a community building and a playground/plaza.
The housing module is divided into two parts with different heights: in the lower one, facing the street, the bathroom and the bedroom take place while the higher one houses the living/dining/kitchen. From this “social” room there is the access to the backyard, a patio facing the inner space of the community.
The difference in height and the pitched roofs would avoid the feeling of being in a “copy-paste” space. This will is represented as well by painting housing modules in two different colors (any guest could change the color according to institutions).
The structure is a wooden frame (2”x6” studs on 24” centers) with metal cladding (corrugated sheet).
The communal space is divided into three “boxes”, one for each main function: office space, meeting place and laundry facility (with an independent access).
