i had a funny little headcanon of felix (my mc) and cove at the beach-
cove noticed that felix just didn't use the sunscreen and knows that felix sunburns a little easily so he points it out. felix just pouts a little and cove just understands that "oh he hates the texture of sunblock doesn't he" (in which cove is totally right) so he just takes a minute and offers to put the sunblock on felix instead. felix blinks and begrudgingly holds their arms out for cove to deal with
felix & cove centric, however not all of these are completely original— i may have seen a post that has a similar headcanon to any of the ones mentioned.
cove would probably eat lemon slices for fun.
or would visibly cringe at the thought of eating a raw lemon and there's no in-between
felix reverting back into his middle school self or borderline "dudebro" mode when separated from friends, family and cove
like "hey man wassa?" instead of "heeey~ how's you?"
they do it ironically with people theyre close with and unironically with people they aren't close with
felix probably listens to glass animals to an unhealthy degree. favorite album is "how to be a human being"
cove, as most would agree is not that big on music
but consider that he listens to asmr alot? the ambient background noise kind.
obviously he still prefers the real thing over asmr though
cove definitely does enjoy acoustic covers of songs though
ukulele sing-alongs with cove and felix at the porch on a summer day ever since felix taught themself how to play one
felix singing cove to sleep (would recommend, i would like to think felix's voice is very heavenly)
felix, as a kid, didn't really like singing bc their voice did not fit the songs they listened to
they still sang though because its fun
cove seeing felix jam out to their music through his window.
however, when people hear felix sing songs that fit their voice its a whole "oh my goodness what the fuck"
cause it sounds so?? good??? woah.
cove, a good cook with a questionable workspace. or, the aftermath of the workspace in question.

thankfully it never happened (yet?)
felix gave cove a scrapbook as a gift in the in-between of steps 2 & 3;
and they still continue filling it up far into the future (as in step 4 onwards)

Was Felix just a regular cat who got adopted by a witch or is the implication that baby witches have animal forms/start out as animals?? (In the au is a witch like a job that just anyone could have or are they like a race of people?) hello hello, hope you're doing well !! i'm currently writing this in public to be unbored and i'm probably gonna be too lazy to edit this when i come back home* so apologies for stuff that may not make sense. i also answered for some merfolk stuff in a separate post, if you're curious! anywhoozies~
basically the surrounding world in this au is pretty alive. it has consciousness that's different from it's inhabitants— so, what's happening is that being a witch could kind of also be classified as some kind of race. there's families who's members are blessed with any random magic domain (i.e. witch, wizard, alchemist, etc.), if any at all, and the families who are known to be a whole line of a specific magic domain.
but speaking of the races, there's actually two: your magic domain and obviously whether you're human, mer or other. felix is actually just raw magic, that's how it is for the witches who were "wished".
"wishing", as i'd like to call it for now, is a manifesting ritual reserved specifically for witches. if the witch is unable to have a child, they "wish" for a kid which ends up in the shape of a gifted animal companion that eventually evolves into a child that at least vaguely represents their parent/s. the only downside is that, the wished child won't be able to reproduce since they are made of magic and therefore does not have reproductive organs (or functional ones?). so, felix is an odd mix of adopted yet simultaneously not really adopted?
for the rest of the castro family, the only member i had a clear image on was definitely liz who is, as you suggested, a nymph. she was pretty protective of that playground after all. for liz's magic domain, since the mc mentioned something about her doing osmosis, maybe she'd be a wizard? (or was she in architecture? i don't remember. 💀💀) for 'lani and pam however.. i have absolutely no idea. other than at least one— or both of them— is definitely a witch, which is where felix came from.
and a reminder that these concepts are pretty subjective to change in the future. especially if i actually end up writing a fic, which might end up be called "tales of sunset bird"? thoughts?

so the basis of the fantasy au, and regarding cove specifically— he isn't entirely merfolk. i intend on keeping cliff as a human, and kyra as the merperson. which explains kyra not visiting often, and cove visiting his mom instead since it's easier for him as a child of both sea and land. then cliff takes cove to shore and they live there instead since cove seems to be completely functional on land and the rest is history :)
but either way, they would've ended up living near a beach like the original storyline so maybe the mer x witch pairing isn't so unlikely lol.
the worldbuilding and character details on that miiiiight change in the future, but i wouldn't really know what to do with the au so uh maybe i should start posting fics on ao3...? (/j of course. haha unless?)
for the second question, the painfully obvious pining started at step 2. when it happened? it was either the day when kyra was supposed to go back to nevada, or off screen in the in-between of step 2 and 3 when they were.. 16?
how it happens and who asks, is felix— who ends up accidentally telling cove out of tiredness after their performance at, i guess, a school recital? (idk if other schools do this asdjdsjd) this happens in the in-between confession i talked about. for the confession when they were 13? i think we already know how that goes so,
