This isn’t the first time Furiae’s been lost, and she doubts it’ll be the last.
Admittedly, disorientation is to be expected when you’ve seemingly ended your own life and awoken in another, stepping into a city beyond your wildest dreams. Dizzying skyscrapers, dazzling lights, and speeding automobiles are among the sights the former Goddess has never seen before, and all of it is more than enough to overwhelm her. Already frail in constitution, she finds herself falling onto a bench, hands gripping onto the cold metal for dear life.
This is all too much – far, far too much. Closing her eyes, she wills herself to calm down, to clear her mind from all this stimulation. If only Caim were here, she thinks, and then stops – just the memory of him, once so tender, now brings forth a rejection as sharp as the knife that had pierced her breast. Caim was not here, he would not be here, and even if he was he would not want her. His pained expression as he looked away, now burned upon her eyelids, made that clear.
Eyes shut and memories dance behind closed lids; eyes open to chaos and the unknown. Either way, there is no escape, none of the eternal rest that death would grant her. As her thoughts threaten to spiral out of control, a new sound enters her ears, layered atop the city noise – a dog barking. Looking down, she sees a small pup yipping at her feet, a tiny hat atop his tiny head. The sight is so unexpected, so strange, that she can’t help the tiny smile that tugs at her lips.
“Why, hello there,” she says, gingerly holding a hand out for him to sniff. His rough tongue laps at her soft skin; it may not be a panacea, but for now it is enough. “And who might you be?”
