You may have noticed Davout was writing nearly every day during this period of exile. He was effectively retired from the army. While the Bourbons were in charge, there was no way he was ever going to be in active military service again so he had a lot of time to chill. The arrival of his children allowed him to spend a lot of time with them, perhaps making up for all the times he was never around during the last ten years, which explains his enthusiastic reports on their behaviour and for his son, at least, his studies.
