I just finished A Darker Shade, which is a collection of body horror short stories by women writers (edited by Joyce Carol Oates), and I've got to say.... wow. Some of them were grotesque, unsettling, and down right sickening, but all of them were thought provoking. It delves into the parts of the female experience that can't be sexualised/glamorised. I could write an essay on each individual story. It's definitely the sort of text that should be read for book clubs I think. It's not for the faint of heart, but I would definitely recommend this book.
