the mirrored appeals of richard/jason and richard/eugene are those of time, specifically regarding richard's sins. richard/jason is about richard's future: jason only knows him as the desperate hero, a gray hat in search of redemption, someone doing his best to help those he once hurt. it's the specific joy of being able to move forward with someone who doesn't have your worst self in his rearview mirror. jason gets to defend richard because of his present self without really having to reckon with his past self. richard/eugene on the other hand is all about the past and worst self. (not even just on richard's end: they meet when eugene is in the 'cast out of eden' chapter of aio's Original Sin coffee shop AU.) in a lot of ways i think richard's manipulation of nicholas adamsworth is his worst crime as well the one he shows the least remorse for, and eugene is witness to it (and still remembers it years later). to be able to move on from that into a working partnership in dbd and, hypothetically, after that into a close relationship is a triumph of the present over the past, not the future. in this way, richason has the appeal of, say, comet while richgene has the appeal of irenides -- both are incredibly romantic but the situations involved produce very different relationships.

Buck is scared of swimming. Skint absolutely took the approach of just throwing him into water and that was how Buck “learned,” so he associates water with being scared for his life. He is very capable of swimming, but will never choose to do so unless necessary. Jules, on the other hand, loves swimming. Growing up around the ocean and pools, she’s been in water her whole life. She will find any excuse to swim.

This doesn’t come up until there’s a youth group trip to Trickle Lake and Buck really tries to convince Jules to skip with him. They don’t like being with the religious kids anyway, right? But Jules knows this is one of her few chances to swim and begs him to come with her so she won’t be stuck having to do the “boring part” of youth group by herself. Buck reluctantly agrees, but when they get to the lake, he won’t even go near the water. Jules stubbornly refuses to go enjoy herself unless she knows what’s going on with him and she can be sure he’s okay. After he explains his fear, she brings him over to the dock and tells him to sit on the edge so they can still talk while she’s in the water. She has no idea, but Buck thinks about that interaction for years any time the topic of swimming comes up. He’ll never forget what it felt like to know that Jules cared enough to make him feel safe, without asking any questions or judging.

Jules' parents never call to ask about her when she's in Odyssey. There's the few phone calls Connie makes to Bill when Jules is being a problem, and the one time that Jan comes and brings her back to LA, but otherwise they are entirely unconcerned with her. Jules is very aware of the fact that they're not only uninterested, but are probably happy to have her out of their lives.

She's always been an inconvenience, something her mom didn't want and her dad didn't need, and this isn't any different.

And then after Jules leaves her career as a pop singer, Jan suddenly starts texting and calling her more often. It's often unintelligible nonsense that Jules can barely understand, tipping her off to the fact that her mom's definitely been drinking and/or doing drugs again. At first, it's easy enough to ignore, but she always holds out hope that maybe a message from Jan will actually be directed to her. Unfortunately, it isn't long before one is.

Jules is with Buck at Whit’s End when her phone buzzes. She glances at it, planning on ignoring whoever it is (she's with her boy-space-friend, after all. What could be more important than that?) until she notices it’s Jan. Up to now, her mom has been pretty quiet for the past few weeks. 

“Everything okay?” Buck tilts his head, looking up from his homework and watching her stare at her phone in disbelief.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Jules swipes up on her lockscreen and opens the message. She immediately wishes she hadn’t.

It takes five horribly nauseous seconds for her to take action, shoving her homework into her backpack and standing. “I have to go home.”

“Jules, what’s goin’ on?”

“Nothing, I just have to go.”

She practically runs home with tears burning shining streaks down her face, burning her eyes. Why can’t she just have normal parents who love her?

(yes it is part of my attempt at a Buck and Ryan fic inspired by @moderatelymars but embarrassingly enough it is, as usual, becoming a buckles fic because I cannot be normal any time those two appear in a scene together)
