Are You Confused About The Material Used In Iridium Spark Plugs?
With high-end electrical devices, it's sometimes hard to determine which is the better choice, Iridium or platinum. Some people swear by platinum but want the added durability of Iridium. So which one is the right choice? It depends.
Iridium spark plugs, also called iridium electrodes, are made by Radio Frequency (RF) electric discharge welding. They use a high-frequency alternating current (HFC) and a ceramic core to generate a spark between two conductors. The electrodes are made from iron or aluminum and the ceramic core is a magnet. This type of electrode does not give off any harmful emissions during operation. The high frequency used creates an arching effect, much like a nozzle on a paint sprayer. In addition, iridium spark plugs also come in a durable anodized finish to withstand wear and tear.
It has been claimed that iridium spark plugs contain metallic ions that promote better conductivity than the other material used in platinum and copper spark plugs. If true, then this would mean that the arching effect could possibly help with better conductivity. It has also been suggested that the strength of the arching effect could help with better overall ignition and less friction. Iridium's arching effect has been compared to that of stainless steel and it is claimed that it is virtually undetectable. However, these claims remain unproven and it is still unclear whether or not the effect is truly advantageous in comparison to other materials.
If the theory behind the improved conductivity is correct, then this would add to the benefits of using nickel alloys in iridium spark plugs. However, the results of tests conducted by various industry leaders have shown that nickel alloy spark plug products with iridium in them are as conductive as platinum without the added arching effect. These tests show that nickel alloys perform as good as platinum in every test. This is contrary to some studies done by some companies that show that nickel blends spark plug products are less efficient than platinum alloys. This again means that there is no difference between the performance between the two.
Another area that is often confused with the concept of an arc is the center electrode design. Center electrode designs are characterized by having a metallic channel surrounded by an opening on one side that extends down into the plug body. Some spark plugs feature a metallic disc shaped opening surrounded by a ring on the other side which is the source of the electricity being driven to the plug. The channel is designed as such in order to allow a constant current to be driven through the metal disc and the ring thereby acting as a guide for the arc.
Iridium and platinum are the only metals that are capable of generating the ions and electrons needed for ionization and this makes them the ideal material for copper spark plugs. They can also provide the current needed to keep a spark plug running until it either burns out or corrodes away. Copper is also the only metal that is completely inert when heated so the arc produced is actually an arc that occurs naturally in copper. This does not change the fact that copper spark plugs will function just as well as nickel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel is made with the proper material.
