Airlines to Debut Brand New Uniforms
Next time you fly, you might want to spend less time on your tablet and more time checking out the latest fashion. Several airlines, including United and Virgin Atlantic, are revamping their personnel uniforms.
United Airlines recently announced they are debuting a modern and sophisticated uniform for all flight attendants, customer service agents, technical operations and ramp workers. With accents of blue, gold, silver and gray, the attire evokes a 60’s Mad Men style.
The new “stylish yet functional” uniforms were designed with employee feedback in mind. Jeff Foland, United’s executive VP of marketing, technology, and strategy, also mentioned “The uniforms project a contemporary, sophisticated look that reflects the modern airline we’re building.”
Uniform revamping seems to be a trend in the industry. Last month, Virgin Atlantic revealed a slightly more edgy uniform created by none other than British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. The redesign will encompass a “futuristic look, referencing the designer’s interest in ‘40s French couture cutting techniques as well as the Savile Row tailoring heritage.”
According to Virgin’s announcement, the line is as chic as it is eco-friendly. Many of the pieces will be made from recycled materials (including polyester yarns made from recycled soda bottles). The full launch of the uniforms will be implemented in 2014.
Uniforms are just one piece of the large puzzle when creating an airline’s brand. Airlines are taking note of their outdated attire and aiming to create a more modern look consistent with the times. Employee feedback is also crucial, as the uniforms must be as comfortable and utilitarian as they are stylish.
