Estrangement, AI and Midjourney. Introduced by Russian formalist Viktor Shlovsky in 1917 in his famous article “Art as Technique,” the main characteristic of 'Estrangement' consists of taking everyday objects or situations and inducing enough strange qualities into them in order to increase the attention of the observer. In theatre, for example, it includes the application of techniques that allow the audience to distance themselves from participating on an emotional level with the play by reminding them of the artificiality of the performance. A method to control the identification of the audience with the figures on stage, thus enhancing the attention given to the reality reflected by the drama on stage. The Verfremdungseffekt was not intended as a purely aesthetical technique but rather as a political mission. In the same vein, we would propose the idea that labeling a dataset is a political act. Unusual and strange stage effects force the audience to consider aspects of the artificial and the role of each object in real events. In doing so, the audience was allowed to maintain an emotional distance from the problems in order to interrogate them rationally and intellectually. What does that all have to do with architecture, you ask? Well, according to Katja Hogenboom, it allows architecture to regain its role in society by emancipating itself and engaging in a new social commitment. AI & Architecture Morphological interrogations of the latent space offered by applications such as Midjourney have to be done with intent. With a starting point for the journey. Considering the encapsulation of so much human culture in the dataset of Midjourney, it allows for the excavations of things we have not necessarely seen in this form. As I have stated before, the designer acts like an archeologist, who uncovers artefacts in the layers of the latent space, and as an archeologist it is sometimes a matter of interpretation. In the case of the images below I was exploring the concept of inflateables. Pneumatic architecture had a huge explosion during the late 60ies. Reyner Banham, Francois Dallegret, Archigram, Bucky Fuller, Cedric Price, but more importantly for the context I grew up in: Hans Hollein, Coop Himmelblau and Hausrucker co. All of which explored the nature of this ephemeral, highly mobile structures. (last images).
