Haven’t posted a fic in a longgggg time, I don’t know how I feel about this one

When you woke up, your phone was going off. Buzzing beneath your arm where it must’ve slipped when you fell asleep late last night. Rubbing your eyes, you rolled over and stretched before grabbing your phone to check it.
It was AJ. Of course it was AJ.
> Hey! Good morning
> You up yet, sleepyhead?
> Wanna hang out today?
You caught yourself smiling and immediately stopped yourself, sighing.
Hang out? Go outside?
You were typing out your reply when she replied.
> I can come over with some lunch
“Okay” You replied, “See you soon💛”
> 😘
Sitting up, you slipped your feet into your fuzzy slippers by the bed. Then you were in your bathroom washing your face and brushing your teeth. By the time AJ was at your front door, you were all freshened up and out of sleepwear.
“Hi, honey.” She pecked you on the lips, “Hm, that’s where my shirt went.”
“It’s comfy.” You chuckled, kissing her back. AJ stepped inside, “I know, looks good on you. Keep it.”
You shut the door and locked it. “So, I brought burgers and fries.” AJ said, placing the bags down on the coffee table. “But I was thinking…”
“What?”
“What if, we take a little walk down to the pond and watch the duckies while we eat?”
You gulped.
“I know.” She said softly, “It’s hard, but it’s a weekday and the kids are all still in class so it’ll probably just be us.”
“I do owe you a movie date, and this is obviously not it.” You replied, “But…a picnic does sound nice. So does an iced tea from that truck in the park.”
“Then, it’s a date.” AJ smiled, kissing your cheek.
You found a mat big enough for the both of you to sit on, grabbed your phone and wallet then went out of the door hand in hand with AJ.
She free hand squeezed yours, thumb brushing over your knuckles. Her other hand was holding onto the bags containing lunch.
Barely ten minutes later, here you guys were in the park right near the pond. You laid the mat and sat down, AJ followed suit and took out the food from the bags. “Still warm.” AJ remarked, handing you your burger, ”Eat up, baby.”
“Thanks.” You unwrapped it and promptly took a bite while keeping your eyes on the ducks in the water. You feel her thumb brushing across your knee through your jeans. You smiled, but was then painfully aware that she was aware of your presence. Of course she was, she was your freaking girlfriend of over a year.
She was not looking at you though. You’d know that, you’d feel that.
‘God, you sound ridiculous. Shut up.’ You thought.
“Hey.” She said, snapping you out of your thoughts. “What are we thinkin’ about today, hm?”
You shrugged, “I dunno.” Sighing. “Why do I sit here and feel like a whole room of people are watching me? No one is watching me, hell— even the ducks are just…doing their own thing.”
“Baby, it’s okay.”
“AJ, I’m a grown woman struggling to even share the same table as you when I eat.”
“And yet you’re still doing it. You’re doing it anyway, that’s what matters.” AJ scooted a little closer, “Look, last week you told me you were gonna eat at a different place than your usual on your lunch break. Did you?”
You nodded.
“Two weeks ago, you told me you were gonna go up to the counter to order our coffees instead of using the kiosk. Did you?”
Again, you nodded.
“Baby, I’m gonna need you to say it.”
A painful lump appeared in your throat, “Yeah.”
“And last month? We went to eat at that restaurant just because we thought the food looked good. It was busy, you said okay anyway. You went for it, we ate, we went home.”
“Yeah well I felt like I was gonna fall into the ground and die.”
“Yet you didn’t. You’re here, watching ducks with me, eating your favourite burger.” AJ squeezed your knee, “You got this, one thing at a time, yeah?”
“Okay.” You nodded, eyes brimming with tears.
“And now, I’m gonna head over for a minute to grab us drinks. Be right back, ‘kay?”
“…I’m gonna— I’m gonna go closer to the ducks for a sec.”
“Okay. Be careful, honey.”
While in line for the iced teas you liked, she looked over her shoulder to see you talking to the ducks. She smiled at the sight, thinking you were thoroughly way too adorable for your own good.
By the time she got back to the mat, you were back as well. “The ducks are so cute.” You gushed, “There are few ducklings now.”
“Really?” AJ tipped your cup closer to you. You took a sip, “Oh, this is delicious. Of course they’re cute, they’re so tiny and silly looking.”
AJ laughed a little, setting your cup down, “Mm, well. I think you’re the cutest freaking person I’ve ever seen.”
“You call me ducky.”
“You think they’re cute, so do I. But yeah I do call you that.” She grinned, “Because, cute.”
“You really know how to make me smile like a fucking idiot.” You scoffed.
“Then I’d gladly be an idiot with you any day.”
“You’re not an idiot.”
“Yeah, and neither are you.” AJ said, “So…I don’t want you to keep calling yourself names, or saying that you can’t do the things you want.”
She continued, “You can do anything you want, and you have been. No matter how hard it feels. It’s scary, and sometimes you give up halfway but that’s fine. I’ll be here, always. We rest, we pick ourselves back up. Y’know?”
“Yeah.” You moved closer to her, “I know. I know doing it anyway is how it helps. But in the process? Oh my God, I feel like I want to cry. Or like, shit my pants.”
“No matter what, you’ve got me. I’ve got your back. But above everything, you’re doing it for you. And I’m so proud of you.”
“I love you.” You rested your head on her shoulder.
“I love you too, honey.”

💬 A/N: I haven’t written anything or posted anything in ages. This was way shorter than liked it to be, but yeah, enjoy I guess?
Hi strangers. Back on my bullshit to kick off 2026.
Watch it in 4k
Title: Close To You
Song: Close To You, by Gracie Abrams
Fandom: Paige and AJ, from the movie Crush
God it's been a long time since I've made a video. I didn't think I had it in me anymore but rewatching this adorable and delightful teenage gay romcom was the perfect pairing for my current Gracie Abrams obsession. Little gay teen Foomatic would have treasured a movie like this in high school. Fun and refreshingly joyful, this movie isn't going to get an Oscar, but it's a win in my little gay, hopeless romantic heart. You can watch Crush on Hulu.
