Thoughts on The Woman in the Window by AJ Miller
Okay, so let me say, I read 80 pages of this book the other day, then picked it up again tonight. I have spent the last four hours reading it with little breaks between-- and this is a 427 page novel. Yeah, it is that good.
I won’t say this is the most original book I have ever read-- it’s very much a modern riff on Rear Window and other Hitchcock-style thrillers (parts of it had me thinking of Midnight Lace too)-- and the big twist was one I suspected two hundred pages in. But nevertheless, the characters were compelling, some of the twists were surprising, and the depiction of the protagonist’s agoraphobia was well-done. I was thoroughly engrossed in the novel’s claustrophobic world.
Also if you love old movies like me, there are just so many shout-outs to classic noir and thrillers. Just about all the major ones are name-dropped or quoted, as the protagonist is a classic movie junkie who spends her nights with everything from Dark Passage to Vertigo.
I can easily see why it’s a best-seller. I literally could not put it down and the climax was INTENSE. Definitely check it out!
