i 100% agree with what you said about how "bury your guys" is a term being used a little too loosely these days. at first i was a little hurt by them killing off Delphine but like, it was part of the story? Everyone who came into contact with Lorraine pretty much died. Also, it's not hard to head canon that Delphine actually lived since Lorraine was kind of an unreliable narrator, and could've lied. If that's an ending one would want to choose. always, i love Lorraine/Delphine so much.
Most of the main cast died. And I was definitely sad when Delphine died, but it was because it was a tragic death. It was SUPPOSED to be sad.
And there was a lot of stuff that I appreciated in how they handled Delphine as a character, including her death.
She had a lot of depth for a romantic interest in an action film. She had her own agency, and her own skills despite being naive and not a very good spy. In fact, she turned out to be a better spy than people took her for! And she got in some good hits (including stabbing Percival in the back so that he couldn’t reach the knife to pull it out) before she finally died.
And her death had a real impact on Loraine! Loraine looked so broken and defeated when she found Delphine dead. So many action heroes just take it in stride when their love interest is killed, but Loraine was really hurting.
Plus, her death wasn’t sexualized. There was a lot of violence in this movie, much of it against women, but it didn’t come across as “violence against women” particularly. It wasn’t gendered the way that a lot of violence against female characters is gendered.
AND Loraine didn’t get with a man after her death! She wasn’t killed off to make room for a male love interest. Delphine was Loraine’s one and only love interest. And her romance with Delphine was Loraine’s main humanizing moment.
Plus, you’re right, it’s very easy to headcanon that she lived. Loraine was not at all a reliable narrator, and it’s possible she told everyone that Delphine was dead just to give Delphine a real chance of escaping from the spy life unscathed. After all, her superiors had already threatened Delphine as a way of getting to her, so why would she tell them if Delphine was really alive?
Overall, yes, I can definitely understand why people would be disappointed that she dies, but her death isn’t “bury your gays” and it doesn’t make the movie overall problematic or worth boycotting.
The movie is pretty groundbreaking as far as female-led action films go and tbh it’s probably one of my top 2 lesbian movies (the other is the handmaiden)
