Woke up at half 6, and had a very long, cold and foggy rickshaw ride to a random little town to catch a bus to Akkelpur. Dad got chatting to a man who took us back to his house and his wife cooked us eggs and ruti for breakfast. We were waiting at the train station for a while, and were completely surrounded by people staring, and they’re not subtle about it either. Eventually the train came, and we were given a seat each after fighting our way through the crowded carriage. Once we arrived in Natore we got an auto-rickshaw to the Natore Rajbari (palace). It’s a group of beautiful old buildings that now lay empty and seems to be a popular place for squatters and people escaping the city. It was a nice hot day, good to walk around in the peace and quiet. We were still followed and stared at, at one point a boy came up to me and tried to take my hand before Dad pushed him away, as it is very rude for them to do this in their culture. For example, if a man and woman are together, the man must be spoken to first. Women travelling alone must sit at the front of the bus around the driver, no matter how crowded it is. And I watched a man make an old lady stand on the train so he could sit. Anyway, it was a nice walk. Rode a rickshaw back to the city, but had to wait for 2 hours for the next available coach back to Dhaka. Had dodgy Chinese at a dodgy restaurant, then sat in the sun for a while. The bus back to Dhaka was the same as the bus out of it. A lot of beeping, swerving, sudden breaking, and close calls, but in the dark. After being stuck in traffic for what seemed like hours, we were dropped off and caught a taxi back to the apartment. It was the most amazing feeling to have a hot shower and a clean bed.
