Shot down during Japan’s attack on Dutch Harbor in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, the “Akutan Zero” sustained only minimal damage. It was recovered and returned to flying condition, enabling test flights which revealed both its capabilities and weaknesses for American pilots and aircraft designers to exploit during World War II.
