Al Alexander, film scribe for the Patriot Ledger, delivers one of the most frustrating reviews any critic has offered up for the new Hunger Games sequel with “MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ a satisfying sequel.”

Alexander’s internal compass about what works and what doesn’t is clearly all wonky.

Satisfying Sequel tries to be offbeat, irreverent, and charming, but succeeds at none of those things. In fact, all this misdirected earnestness succeeds at is being cloying and irritatingly obtuse. After several failed attempts at puns (“you’d be stupid not to go cupid all over her sass“—groan), Alexander gets downright weird with his shots at sarcasm: “If you don’t know the difference between [a mockingjay] and a popinjay, you need read no further.”

The entire work reads like this; jumbled metaphors are followed by misguided attempts at humor which are, in turn, followed by clunky, head-scratching phrases.

The piece works best when Alexander stops trying to be cutesy and gets down to critiquing. When he does this, he manages to make some salient points, but before you know it, he’s back to his shenanigans and you’ll want nothing more than to bail on this overlong piece of cornball criticism.

Al Alexander Touches the Void in “Heavenly Performance”

Al Alexander feels like the excited friend that can’t stop talking in, “MOVIE REVIEW: Bullock gives a heavenly performance in Gravity. “ The general tone of the critic in Heavenly Performance is always energetic, but reaches the outer limits of annoyance as well.

In the mindful opening paragraph, Alexander offers a unique tidbit for the reader to chew on, however by the second paragraph Alexander is noting “the epitome of heavenly bodies” of the leads. Readers will begin to wonder whether or not Alexander is going to be able to stay on track. Fortunately for all, he does.

Heavenly Performance is a unique reading experience, and manages to fill a void that is often left unfilled by the common review: character analysis. Al Alexander shows a deep amount of respect for his readers by not only supplying information about the director’s accomplishments, but also a lengthy narrative on the performances of the leads.

Alexander’s creativity runs wild in Heavenly Performance, and his liftoff allows him to find unique perspectives on the subtleties of acting that will please the reader. He supplies laughs at times, though not all of his attempts are successful.

The final paragraph closes graciously and gives the review a pleasing sense of closure. Though there are better reviews out there, you won’t regret spending a few minutes with Alexander and his Heavenly Performance.

Al Alexander’s “Leave ’Kick-Ass 2’ Behind” Is Toxic Fanboy Vomit

Al Alexander ‘s “Leave “Kick Ass 2“Behind”  is nothing more than ranty fanboy hatemail that adds little or no value to the reader.

Watch out we have a movie snob here. With lines like “It wasn’t a huge hit, no doubt because it was too smart and savvy for the masses.” you to will be whispering “judgmental douche” right before exiting the review because the writer’s expanding head is breaking the digital fourth wall.

Subtly is clearly not his forte. There is an air of bitterness as his beloved Kick-Ass was bashed by critics only to be reborn as a phoenix-like cult classic.

Our critic even goes as far as to call the filmmaker names in an obvious nod to his middle school days  going as far as to base the filmmakers intelligence upon the type of movie he created, “Wadlow makes clear he doesn’t understand the meaning of the word parody. Heck, I bet he can’t even spell it.” With humor like that, Alexander should be headlining at the Laugh Factory in no time flat.

Serving as more of a rant than an actual review our critic crosses the line from useful commentary to annoying diatribe too many times to count. If you feel like listening to the guy at the local comic book shop pee all over a director and a film then this is the review for you if you feel like something a tad more objective skip this one.
