St. Paul & the Broken Bones Bring New Album to Brooklyn Steel This Week
In troubled times, it’s natural for people to retreat to comfort. And when it comes to musical comfort food, St. Paul & the Broken Bones (above, performing “Apollo” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!) are mashed potatoes and gravy, a heaping dollop of smooth-whipped heavy soul with a salty finish. Led by “St.” Paul Janeway, the Broken Bones are a comforting R&B throwback bringing to mind all the late greats with an overwhelming horn-fueled energy. Still, it’s always nice to see the old favorites get a little bit of an update, and the new Broken Bones album, Young Sick Camellia (stream it here), is the band’s most forward-looking by far. Taking their soulful foundation and adding some modern-day funk, with a strong synth-y bass sound, Janeway and Co. have put a twist on that gravy. Whether dabbling with new sounds or channeling Otis Redding, the Broken Bones are best experienced live, a frenzied, sweaty groove, Janeway ranging the full stage in R&B overdrive. Lucky for you, St. Paul & the Broken Bones come to town for two nights of fun, playing Wednesday and Thursday at Brooklyn Steel. Bring your dancing shoes and a healthy appetite for an oversize serving of soulful comfort food. —A. Stein | @Neddyo
