The weight that we carry.
Alain Prost lifting the coffin of his lifelong rival, Ayrton Senna, at his funeral, Sao Paulo, 1994
Commentator: What is the current situation between your drivers? Ron Dennis: There's a little tension there at the moment, mainly because they're on equal points, we're three races into the season, and it's reasonably apparent at the moment that we have a competitive edge on most of the other teams, which tends to focus everything on an outcome between Alain and Ayrton. It's a little bit like marriage though; a lot of people are married, but for it to work you have to work hard at it. It's a common objective, and that's the problem, they've both got a common objective of being the world champion. It's just a tense difficult situation, but in control.
Ron Dennis describing Prost and Senna's relationship as marriage completely unprompted to ESPN while also downplaying how bad the relationship between them is at the Mexican GP 1989.
Some Thoughts on Monaco 1989
Apparently Ferrari doesn’t know what caused Berger’s accident at Imola b/c the tifosi stole enough pieces off of his car that it’s hard to tell 😂
March and Benetton STILL using their 1988 cars omg
"We have been assured…that all is well between [Senna and Prost], but I believe that’s not to be the case. Alain Prost was absolutely livid with Senna for what he regarded as a less than honest attitude. “That’s assurance from the management of McLaren and not from the drivers themselves.” I'm pretty sure they aren't speaking at the moment so I'm not sure how that qualifies as "all is well" but whatever the PR department has to say I guess...
Rene Arnoux claiming he can’t adjust to naturally aspirated and James calling BS on it verbatum on the air lol. Considering the situation James is probably right but struggling to adjust to the new way of driving is a real thing that happens current season case and point.
Arnoux is not letting Prost’s OG teammate rivalry die.
I don't think backmarkers should be allowed to impede frontrunners but Arnoux choosing violence about it is admittedly really funny
Cars driving around marshals on the track after de Cesaris and Piquet collided and have both of their cars stopped in the middle of the road has so much fear in my heart
“Good night to Australia and good night to Alan Jones particularly” oh James Hunt how I love you. He would have loved those "good night to everyone except" videos
Wait wait wait why is Martin Brundle aloud to get out of the car while they work on it in the pits? I though the rules were that you could not leave the car during the race hence why Senna was able to keep going in Suzuka and Prost was not…commentators also seem shocked by it but that’s more because they don’t know what’s going on than thinking it’s not allowed.
Senna and Prost having lapped the entire field is iconic
Williams is also using their 1988 car...I knew F1 used to be much much harder to profit from but I didn't realize not being able to have a new car ready to go was such a problem.
"[Senna moves] up intro the world championship lead jointly with his teammate Alain Prost, and from now on we can really expect to see the sparks fly” Murray was that the expression you wanted to use are we sure about that.
proper name place name backstory stuff
Brazilian reports about Prost attending Senna's funeral and interview
A little collection that I made from May 2 to 5, 1994
he's barely taller than them on the top step of the podium
Some Thoughts on San Marino 1989
I'm watching from the race restart because that was what I could find in English and the vibes are SO OFF. Makes sense in hindsight, I just didn't expect it because I knew Gerhard Berger ended up being ok
Immediately THE Senna-Prost pass of all time and nobody knows how consequential this will be
Johnny Herbert was actually quite good as a rookie?!
Alain continually getting the fastest lap out of rage LMAO
“There are no team orders in the McLaren Honda outfit” I bet Ron Dennis was wishing there were right about now because the 'gentleman’s agreement' is about to destroy the cohesion of his drivers
“Herbert is climbing up the field and Prost is climbing onto the gearbox of Senna’s McLaren” no comment that's just funny as is
Prost continually lapping faster than Senna but unable to catch him he must be FUMING
James Hunt is like 'Johnny should continue [after spinning out] even though he will be DSQ’d for a push start because he can get experience' that’s certainly A Take. Ended up being of no consequence though because he did not get DSQd.
Also Hunt saying that it’s rare to see Prost make mistakes like spinning into the grass and wondering why he could have lost concentration/considering if there was a break problem. The fact that they don’t know that this is core prosenna lore is killing me. Oh for the age of team radios on the broadcast but also I dread to think what might come out of their mouths.
“Andrea de Cesaris, who is not unknown to television viewers in terms of leaving the course” is the most polite way to say he crashes a lot that I've ever heard
“With no apologies for mentioning the British drivers” people who call British Bias today would NOT survive the 1980s
Ending the race coverage with somebody from the newsroom giving a report on Gerhard Berger's injuries rather than showing the podium (which I understand completely but would quite like to see for this one all things considered) ends off this cursed race
Just imagine being Alain Prost at this one, having basically the same disagreement with your teammate as Gilles and Didier at the same track seven years later that tore apart their friendship and neither of them are even alive to know about it. Also somebody crashed really badly at Tamburello corner. If this was fiction it would be too cliche. Cursed race, cursed track, only fun to watch if you know what is going on behind the scenes because the aggregated the times so you can't even know what position anyone is in.
