Doug Jones is running for Senate in Alabama and some enterprising folks made a campaign ad using Dig-Dug as the theme. I like it when games make it in the cultural consciousness enough to be used in political campaigns (see: the “Trump Mains Hanzo” billboard elsewhere on this site which I am too lazy to link to), but even more when they are “B Side” games, which in my opinion Dig Dug is. It’s never had a real sequel in the US (we’ll leave Mr. Driller out of it for now), and despite being a classic arcade game, it’s really never penetrated into the zeitgeist like Ms. Pac-Man or Mario or Space Invaders or Minecraft. 

Also, I guess this makes the weird dragon enemy Roy Moore. He's best known in real life for being removed from office twice (for malfeasance) when he was a supreme court judge in Alabama. Roy Moore is endorsed by such luminaries and intellectual heavyweights as Sarah Palin and that alcoholic-looking old man from breitbart.com who wears two button down shirts over each other at the same time which even I know is a really awful fashion faux-pas. (He also favors khaki chinos which, as a west coaster, I really have no ability to explain from a fashion perspective, because I never finished The Preppy Handbook.) 

Anyway, no need to get into the politics of things, but after careful consideration by our editorial board, Incredibly Strange Games officially endorses Doug Jones based on his affinity for Dig Dug. Oh, heck, you may also be curious to know that Doug Jones also has a history as a successful prosecutor including convicting some high profile thugs from the KKK who murdered four little girls in Alabama with a bomb they placed at a church, and who had dodged prosecution for decades. In our editorial books, that makes Doug Jones a stand up guy.

(OK, I can’t really leave Mr. Driller out of it. Mr Driller is the protagonist of Dig Dug’s son. The guy in Dig Dug is actually named Taizo Hori and Mr. Driller is actually named Susumu Hori. Susumu’s mother, if you believe the internet, which you’re reading right now so you better, is the protagonist of space shooter Baraduke (AKA Alien Sector), although per the lore lords at the MUGEN wiki, she is no longer married to Taizo.)    

I got all worked up last night because I started reading about the gross history of the murderous KKK in Alabama so I forgot to mention that Heather is the one who tipped me off to this piece of importan Dig-Dugania.

The state of Alabama executed death row inmate Nathaniel Woods last night for allegedly murdering three Birmingham police officers in 2004. Pronounced dead at 9:01pm local time, Woods gave no final statement, according to the state corrections department. He was 44 years old at the time of his execution by lethal injection.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey refused Woods’ clemency application despite the controversial nature of the case, and the United States Supreme Court ordered a temporary halt to the execution only minutes before it was scheduled to be carried out only to deny the last-minute stay.

Although Woods was convicted in 2005 of capital murder, there was doubt at the time surrounding a number of aspects of his case, including his culpability and his representation. His co-defendant, Kerry Spencer, said that Woods was innocent. Spencer also noted that Woods ran when gunfire broke out, and he claimed full responsibility for fatally shooting the three officers. Also on death row in Alabama, Spencer said, “Nate is absolutely innocent.”

Martin Luther King III also urged Governor Ivey to stop the execution. In a letter to the governor, he wrote, “Killing this African American man, whose case appears to have been strongly mishandled by the courts, could produce an irreversible injustice.”

Woods’ attorneys have pointed to previous mishandling of Woods’ case. They said that due to his socioeconomic status his representation was a court-appointed lawyer who had never handled a capital case and who ultimately inadequately investigated the case. Additionally, there is no record of Woods ever being offered a plea deal. Former District Attorney David Barber, who prosecuted Woods, has submitted an affidavit saying he has no knowledge of any proffered deal.

The surviving police officer, Michael Collins, has stated that he knew it was not Woods who shot at him. However, in the state of Alabama, even if a person did not pull the trigger, accomplices are still eligible for the death penalty.

WEEK 35

This week was all about the site drainage and column iterations. Earlier in the week we met with Mr. John Jay and crew to talk about how drainage is usually dealt with in Greensboro. The following day we met with Adele Schirmer, a civil engineer from Georgia to better understand our options; considering the site topography, the amount of water the roof receives and where all the water would go once its on the ground. We talked through potentially using some of the water for the vines on the screens or making a retentions system at the back of site. This would slow down the water to the overflow drain from site and help avoid washing away the top soil and gravel on the courtyard.

After the meeting with Adele we spent some time Sunday surveying Beacon Alley, which is adjacent to our site, to figure out how the water flows down the street and away from the site. Which is incredibly important to understand how much we can alter the grade on the courtyard and still allow the site to drain well.

After studying the first set of models we made, we took the elements from those columns that we wanted to include in our design and increased the scale for the next set to model the connection details more accurately. Stay tuned for images of the model in the next post!
