I read that Volume 5 has some hints that Mary could develop romantic feelings toward Alan. Is this true?
Yeah, I guess so (at least I think so XDD)
In Volume 5, when Katarina asks the girls if they “had any romances going on”, Mary thinks of an experience with Alan, where a nobleman was bothering and aggressively flirting with Mary, making her annoyed and a bit uncomfortable. Mary thinks that can probably handle the thug on her own, but she didn’t need to as Alan heroically came to her rescue and took her away from the scene while scaring her harasser off.
"Are you alright?" Alan asked of me once I finally feel safe.
Taking a good look at him, I saw that he was out of breath. He must have run here to save me as soon as he saw that I was in trouble, I thought, and I couldn't help but smile.
"Thank you" I said, to which he blushed, turned away from me, and grunted a reply.
Perhaps he was childish, but I was glad to have him as my fiance, even if it was just for show.
And I wouldn't tell anyone that, on that day, I felt something for Alan that I had never felt before.
And you can tell that both parties has their hearts skip a beat (Alan from Mary’s smile, and Mary from Alan’s gesture) which was really cute to see! There’s also the fact that in Volume 4, Alan has admitted that he had become more fond of Mary ever since the two had become honest that they loved different people (not that he knew that their eyes are on the same girl), and while Mary said the same in the paragraphs prior, personally I feel like Mary’s is different, in which hers is a bit longer and unknowingly pure
(like I might just be pulling that last one out of my ass, but other than the fact that she tried to bury Alan’s feelings for Katarina for her own self-benefit, I feel like there has to be some semblance of concern for his own feelings too, like in a “Well, I’m gonna run away with Katarina anyways, so I won’t let him no his feelings so he wont be too hurt when we’re gone” kind of way ;;w;; again I might just be pulling that out of my ass hgfjsh)
It might not mean a lot, but it does show that they really trust each other and got each other’s back when it counts. They have such a good dynamic, and they both are each other’s types anyways (Alan, being into fun, strong and independent women who would stay by his side (and has never compared him to his brothers) like Katarina and Mary; and Mary, being into honest and straightforward partners who are a bit adorably dense and gullible like Katarina and Alan) so it’s not hard to think that deep down in their hearts, their fondness to each other can bloom into something more ghfjsdgdhs.
Gah, I really love their dynamic, like just thinking about how it’s changed form Fortune Lover and how much better it’s become just makes me smile uwu. They’ve honestly got a long way before their eyes are ever removed from Katarina, but it’s not impossible to see that happen since they already have such great chemistry with other!
