The dehumanization of Katarina Claes messes me up every time.

Despite being the one to end up in a video game, the person she sees the most as a “character” is herself. Katarina Claes is a Villainess, a trope, someone who is destined to meet their fate simply because all fictional characters do. All villains do.

It doesn’t help that her friends only see half of her. They don’t get to know the real Katarina. Scared of her own reflection, Katarina. Scared of her friends turning on her and killing her, Katarina.

They see her as some incomprehensible being. They love her and everything about her, but they gave up on understanding her. They accept the surface level they have and move on.

They treat her like a fictional character in the way they idealize her and yet simplify her to “weird sweetheart.”

Katarina Claes is either a Villainess or an Ideal. She is never just Katarina. And she will never be that nameless girl again. She lost her true identity so long ago, and now is just another character.

Katarina Claes is such an interesting character despite her simplicity. Like, okay she’s funny first off. She pranks her friends with fake snakes, she’s so dense she can’t pick up any of their massive crushes on her, everyone thinks she’s awesome because she’s a major dumbass who likes gardening and climbing trees. His brain is chibi versions of herself having court meetings with each other.

She’s also terrified that one day her friends will exile or kill her on arbitrary circumstances because she was just born evil. She can’t see why her friends would truly like her because her self worth is in a garbage drain. She’s far smarter than she gives herself credit for even if her sword and magic powers need work. She’s unapologetically loving and always willing to go the extra mile for those she cares about and that’s what makes people care about her so much.
