Alan Kitching.
Alan Kitching
... is a world-renowned typographer, designer and letterpress artist. His work has been incredibly influential in the fight to keep letterpress alive in the modern printing age. His work with type and printing is so successful that I feel it would almost be a crime to not mention him in this project.
In over 50 years Kitching has created work for the likes of The Guardian, the National Theatre, British Library, Tate Modern, Penguin Books, and Royal Mail among many others. He explores colour, texture and composition, sometimes creating images formed from letters.
There is a playful yet repetitive element to his work that often derives from letterpress. The uncertainty of how a print will turn out and the uniqueness of each individual image interests me. When you create an image digitally you can make multiple identical copies. However when an image is printed manually (either by letterpress, screen-printing or otherwise) each print is completely unique and can never be replicated. There is an organic texture that is created from printing by hand that I could never create on a computer. However this also means that the images you create need a dynamic structure and composition in order to be successful. Kitching achieves this and much more, using bold typography and striking colours to print, sometimes returning to add detail, finer lines and more delicate type.
