Pin Hole PhotographyÂ
I created these simply by punching holes in black card and then photographing them with a light behind. I experimented with the focus, composition, light colour and movement. I then used photoshop to edit them by increasing the contrast and making the blacks darker
Victorian Book Cover Design
Coralie Bickford Smith
...graduated from Reading University where she studied Typography and Graphic Design. Currently working in-house at Penguin Books, she designed the current range of hard back Penguin Classics including a range of 20âs art deco inspired covers for F. Scott Fitzgerald. She is an award winning designer and is known for bringing new life to the traditional style of book binding and cover design.Â
Her clothbound hardcover series echo Victorian book cover design by using a simple colour palette of only two colours, a repeating/tessellating pattern and heavy weighting on the illustration rather than the text. They use the traditional method of cloth binding which was invented in around the early 1820s. They first began using silk and satin but these lost popularity as they werenât suitable for everyday use and often the cloth came away from the glue. Using cotton-cloth came about in around 1821. The cloth is often embossed or foil stamped.
I honestly think all of her covers are beautiful. They have a delicacy and somehow a complex simplicity. They turn the book into a beautiful object, something that will look pretty on the shelf and entice people to hold it and thus read its contents. The patterns she uses on the front also relate to the text without giving too much away. This is something that I want to achieve with my book design.

The Russian Revolution and The Naziâs (Hitler)Â
The Russian Revolution
Two revolutions in 1917 - February and October.
Described as one of the most explosive political events of the 20th Century
The February Revolution began with protesters in the streets of Petrograd. There had been unrest in Russia for some time but this demonstration backed up by a large number of striking industrial workers let to the Petrograd Army Garrison being sent out to deal with the uprising. There was some violence and it ended with the abdication of Czar (Emperor) Nicholas and the end of the Romanov dynasty. A provisional government was formed who opposed the violent social revolution. Russiaâs involvement in WW1 continued though this was highly opposed.
The October Revolution was led by leftist Vladimir Lenin and was made up of the Bolsheviks (a faction of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour party who later became the communist party of the Soviet Union). They overthrew the provisional government and Lenin became the dictator of the worlds first communist state. He wanted a soviet government formed of councils of soldiers, peasants and workers.
The Russian Civil War broke out shortly after Lenin came into power and it was formed of two sides - The Red Army who fought for Lenin and The White Army which was made up of monarchists, capitalists and supporters of a democratic socialism.
The civil war ended in 1923 with Leninâs red army claiming victory and establishing the Soviet Union
Lenin fell ill in 1923 and subsequently more power fell into Leon Trotskyâs hands.
Leninâs death in 1924 led to the beginning of Stalinâs rise in power.

It won one Oscar (and 24 other awards with 121 nominations. Stephen is portrayed by Eddy Redmane and he won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in 2015. Jane is portrayed by Felicity Jones and she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in 2015.
The score was composed by JĂłhann JĂłhannsson.
Further Damaged Photos
Some of these images were taken with the bleach and oil still on the surface of the photo and some are after everything has been wiped off.Â
Stephen GillÂ
Born in 1971 he developed an early interest in photography. Well known for his urban landscapes but more recently has become more experimental in his approach. I am interested in two of his seriesâ: Buried and Best Before End.
Buried - a series in which he would photograph a place and then bury the print somewhere nearby. He would then returns week later to discover how the photo had been effected. Often some would have been so damaged by weather or other conditions in the place that it was unrecognisable. This collaboration with the physical locations allowed the places to âmake its markâ on the image.
Best Before End - explores the issue of energy drink consumption in the UK. He developed images in a variety of brands of energy drink and then using a brush distorts the images often beyond recognition. This alongside his previously used technique of placing things within the frame whilst developing creates an eerie, abstract, textural effect.
I have wanted to get into the dark room for a while, and seeing his work has inspired me even further to get experimenting with developing film.
Seung-Kwan Oh
Seung-Hwan Oh is a South Korean based artist living and working in Seoul. He studied film and photography at Hunter College in New York, US.
His practice is inspired by his interests in other topics and his thoughts and approaches to other disciplines including science and philosophy.
âThe visual result of the symbiosis  between film matter and organic matter is the conceptual origin of this body of work.â Boraam Han & Seung-Hwan Oh www.seunghwan-oh.com/text1 .
I am particularly interested in his Impermanence project, which contains a series of distorted images created by allowing a fungus to damage the analogue film. This process can take anything from a few months to a years and he has been working on the project since 2012. The work is designed to remind us that humans have an expiration date. They are inspired by the second law of thermodynamics which essentially states that when energy changes from one form to another, more and more of it is âwastedâ. Eventually differences in temperature, pressure and density will âeven outâ over time. Though he destroys the portraits of people he creates, it is not overtly violent. Each image has its own tale to tell but all of them show fragility and the damage of time and nature.
Development Using Liquid GalaxyÂ
âLiquid Galaxyâ Experiments
I created these by photographing ink, water, oil, soap and nail polish. I then edited them using photoshop but I simply increased the contrast and saturation.
I was inspired to create these as it is a technique I have tried in the past inspired by the work of Rus Khasanov. I have tried both the oil and ink technique and the nail polish technique but never together. I was also thinking about the main ideas in the book of space, time and the cosmos. I am really pleased with how these turned out as I think they work well visually, actually look like space (I can see nebulae, star clusters, black holes etc) and relate to the text.Â
