Their destination loomed before them, overgrown with moss and vines. If there was anyone living there, they hadn’t done much to make it not look deserted, though whether it was purposeful or not remained to be seen. Their parties branched off at the main door, going separate ways to investigate.

Priam drew Ragnell and took the lead to the right. If there was anything, he swore he wouldn’t be caught off guard.

Well... he didn’t see anything.

The first room he poked his head into was dim, and all he could make out were walls lined with boxlike shapes, floor to ceiling, with a few more around the middle of the room. He squinted, unable to put his finger on what they were.

“Uh... got some cabinets in here, maybe? Not how I would make them, but I dont think there’s any danger in here.”

"Elincia?"

Reyson approaches her slowly, a small box in his hands. "I heard it was your birthday today, and I wanted to bring you this..." He holds out the box with a smile. Inside is a delicate necklace with a small, leaf shaped charm and a green crystal next to each other on the chain. "I saw this a while ago, and I thought you would like it. Happy birthday."

"It's beautiful, Reyson," Elincia whispers softly as she lifts the lid on the box. Truly it is, as well. Delicate and modest but stunning nonetheless. She traces the charm with her fingertips, a smile forming upon her lips. "Thank you, I love it. I promise I'll take good care of it." She pulled it around her neck, fiddling clumsily with the clasp until it finally locked into place.

"What do you think? I think it's a real treasure. Reyson - thank you for brightening my birthday."

Elincia had to waddle around the dormitories very carefully in her costume. So rotund was it that she feared if she tripped over she wouldn’t be able to stand up again after. At least the pumpkin costume had lots of space for storing sweet treats to dish out later amongst the festivalgoers, packed in the monastery halls and surrounding time. Each step was gentle and deliberate as she made her way to Reyson’s door.

Rapping her knuckles three times upon the door she waited until the Heron prince opened the door. Perched upon his head was a brilliant, glittering halo. She let out a joyful giggle.

“Why Reyson, you look practically angelic this evening!” Elincia gushed as she waited outside for him to be ready to leave. She really didn’t want to try and squeeze in and out of the doorf rame right now. Leaving her own room had been a difficult enough endeavour. Instead she outstretched a hand to him, waiting for him to take it.

“Are you ready to go? I hear the projectionist has done a terrific job!” Bouncing on her feet, the Crimean grinned brightly. “I’ve heard it looks like the harvest festival is in town. Let’s enjoy the sights together.” Oh, she hoped to fill her gourd with all kind of sweet delights to hand over to the kids around town. Perhaps it was childish but the idea made her wistul, she’d never had the opportunity to go trick or treating herself. She realised she was a little too old for it these days but it would be so exciting and charming just to experience the festival and see the glee on children’s faces.

“Leanne!”

Reyson darted through the crowd of people ready to leave, slinking through the crowd to get to his sister. He reaches her side, taking her hands in his.

“Leanne, we’re going to be separated,” he starts. “I need you to promise me you won’t take any risks you don’t have to.” It’s a demand, not a request, her brother’s panic in the back of her throat makes that clear. “Elincia is going to be going with you, and I trust her to keep you safe. If anything happens, run to her. Okay?” He squeezed her hands tighter, gently pulling her into a hug. “I don’t know if we’ll be able to sense each other, but I’ll try to reach out to you.”

     "It'll be alright, Brother," Leanne said with what she hoped was a reassuring grin, "I'll be with Queen Elincia and Lady Micaiah, so I'm not worried at all!" Well, maybe just a tiny bit, but that was barely a thrum in the air compared to her brother's emotions, which she was trying to calm at the moment. Truthfully, Leanne couldn't deny that she was a little excited to be on a mission somewhere without a single Bird Laguz looking out for her. It made her feel independent and mature, and she would do her best to make sure she could live up to that image!

     "You'll be careful yourself, won't you?" Leanne hadn't recognized a single name that had been called alongside her brother's, though maybe Reyson might, having been here longer and as a professor. She cuddled into her brother's embrace, fluttering her wings so that their edges briefly touched those of Reyson's. "Let's promise to all come back safe and sound by the end of the mission!"

LOOK:   for your muse to catch mine staring

              It started in his youth. Befriending a small bird that fell in the path of his pony on a ride, a little thing he’d have crushed if he were not more watchful than his instructor. Then, nursing it to health from its empty stomach and shattered wings. Letting it free. Ever since then he could never really place a finger on his appreciation for the small, delicate things found in nature.

            Some things simply are the way they are. Like the Hero-King’s occasional visits to the fishing pier or courtyard without a word of announcement. If time be willing, an hour in his week spent dangling fish or string in front of fat cats, or feeding the monastery sparrows. The same sense of peace and delight he finds from gazing upon a man in their image.

               Seated beside him in the dining hall, his eyes shimmer subtly at that impressive wingspan. Feathers whiter than a newborn lamb, softer to the imagination than any chiffon and silk hung in his wardrobe. A royal tailor’s labors of rearing the finest silkworms and culturing fibers into plush fabrics could not compare to their texture.. Probably!

               And they were close enough to touch at that. His fingers twitch, an urchin’s penniless hand just shy of being slapped from the sweetmeats in a candy display. How cute; he almost wishes to—but oh, his sparkling stare has been caught. 

               He quickly drops the expression, raising a friendly smile that leaves none the wiser:   “  That plate of food you’re eating looks delicious. I was only just wondering whether it was the appetizer or the entree. Perhaps you’d happen to know?  “   What this man does not know of a king’s childish yearning will certainly not hurt him.

It had been a brutal battle, bloody and violent. The kind that scars the mind at least as much as the body. She aches deep in her bones but she was in one piece. A small miracle, given what they’ve been through here today. 

Bruises will heal, as will bones but hearts will take much longer.

She spots him on the edge of the battlefield, clutching his side and rushes over as fast as her sore legs will carry her.  A cursory glance lets her know Reyson isn’t about to keel over and perish on her. A slight mercy - he’s clearly in pain and struggling.

Elincia slips herself under a wing and arm and holds onto his side as delicately as she can manage. He winces so she relaxes her grip and allows him to adjust his position and lean his weight on her shoulder. The infirmary tents are distant but in sight. She looks up at his face, contorted in a dark grimace and attempts a watery smile.

He will be okay. She’ll make sure of it.

Heron, the girl had said. I’m a… Heron!

But looking at him now, it’s easy to forget. (Or, looking at him now, it’s easy to remember.

Niles is four and desperate and so, so terrified. His shoulder aches every time he moves and throbs even when he doesn’t, the bone nudged out of place when he’d failed to steal half-rotten fruit. Filthy thief, the merchant had snarled, and Niles had ran and ran and ran until his legs gave out from beneath him and dragged red over the dirt roads.

The fountain he crawls to is dilapidated and abandoned, devoid of water and coin. Niles leans against it and feels his lungs burn, forced between catching his breath and heaving dried sobs. Above him, the moon shines; above him, a moss-covered angel stands with scales in his hands, the once-beloved centerpiece of the fountain.

Abandoned, the both of them. Discarded, forgotten, left to rot.

Useless, Niles thinks then. Angels can’t even save themselves. Why ever think they can save him?)

It’s that statue he thinks of when the angel—heron—turns. Not abandoned, not forgotten, but useless all the same.

“Oh, this is exciting,” he says aloud, and smiles when he catches the man’s eye. “I never thought I’d get a chance to see two of you. Come!” Come. “Might I have the pleasure of seeing another bird up close?”

Here, angel—you’d look more familiar if you were covered in filth.
