"Elincia?"

Reyson approaches her slowly, a small box in his hands. "I heard it was your birthday today, and I wanted to bring you this..." He holds out the box with a smile. Inside is a delicate necklace with a small, leaf shaped charm and a green crystal next to each other on the chain. "I saw this a while ago, and I thought you would like it. Happy birthday."

"It's beautiful, Reyson," Elincia whispers softly as she lifts the lid on the box. Truly it is, as well. Delicate and modest but stunning nonetheless. She traces the charm with her fingertips, a smile forming upon her lips. "Thank you, I love it. I promise I'll take good care of it." She pulled it around her neck, fiddling clumsily with the clasp until it finally locked into place.

"What do you think? I think it's a real treasure. Reyson - thank you for brightening my birthday."

Elincia had to waddle around the dormitories very carefully in her costume. So rotund was it that she feared if she tripped over she wouldn’t be able to stand up again after. At least the pumpkin costume had lots of space for storing sweet treats to dish out later amongst the festivalgoers, packed in the monastery halls and surrounding time. Each step was gentle and deliberate as she made her way to Reyson’s door.

Rapping her knuckles three times upon the door she waited until the Heron prince opened the door. Perched upon his head was a brilliant, glittering halo. She let out a joyful giggle.

“Why Reyson, you look practically angelic this evening!” Elincia gushed as she waited outside for him to be ready to leave. She really didn’t want to try and squeeze in and out of the doorf rame right now. Leaving her own room had been a difficult enough endeavour. Instead she outstretched a hand to him, waiting for him to take it.

“Are you ready to go? I hear the projectionist has done a terrific job!” Bouncing on her feet, the Crimean grinned brightly. “I’ve heard it looks like the harvest festival is in town. Let’s enjoy the sights together.” Oh, she hoped to fill her gourd with all kind of sweet delights to hand over to the kids around town. Perhaps it was childish but the idea made her wistul, she’d never had the opportunity to go trick or treating herself. She realised she was a little too old for it these days but it would be so exciting and charming just to experience the festival and see the glee on children’s faces.

It had been a brutal battle, bloody and violent. The kind that scars the mind at least as much as the body. She aches deep in her bones but she was in one piece. A small miracle, given what they’ve been through here today. 

Bruises will heal, as will bones but hearts will take much longer.

She spots him on the edge of the battlefield, clutching his side and rushes over as fast as her sore legs will carry her.  A cursory glance lets her know Reyson isn’t about to keel over and perish on her. A slight mercy - he’s clearly in pain and struggling.

Elincia slips herself under a wing and arm and holds onto his side as delicately as she can manage. He winces so she relaxes her grip and allows him to adjust his position and lean his weight on her shoulder. The infirmary tents are distant but in sight. She looks up at his face, contorted in a dark grimace and attempts a watery smile.

He will be okay. She’ll make sure of it.
