i felt bad for both of them during FS because both are fighting demons none of the other characters can fathom but also that shit was funny as fuck and if we really are getting an athens movie i cant wait to see them take whatever is wrong with them to the next level

albert volandel is the funniest character in free. he beats haru one time and haru starts imaging him as this domineering godlike final boss of the freestyle stroke when in reality hes just. a guy with no friends. like haru spends the entirety of fs1 treating albert like a void wizard who is trying to kill him with mind hammers but albert is literally just good at freestyle and thats it. haru is lying awake at night imaging scenarios where albert disembowels him with his mind like a psychic pokemon and irl albert is eating saltines in his bedroom with a cat ear headset on streaming animal crossing new horizons to 0 people. he and haru have this bizarre childhood trauma bond that is never explained. albert has a evil grandpa for some reason that is never explained. they cant fucking understand each other. idc abt rinharu or makoharu anymore whatever is going on between haru and albert is much funnier
when fs1 first came out there was a lot of confusion from ppl taking the whole albert possession scene literally. some ppl were even mad that free was suddenly becoming a paranormal anime
and u know what i’m actually mad they didnt double down. do you know how hard as fuck such an abrupt genre change wouldve been. it goes from haha shirtless men with no nipples to our friend has been possessed by a lonely swedish shadow wizard with no friends who watches tiktoks alone on his phone
to save him rin has to learn a counterspell and effectively become a wizard. during the night pool scene he now has a spell tome and big naturals. do u guys understand my vision

Kururi is Sosuke’s single mom who raised him on her own alone after her husband left the both of them without explanation. She works as a physical therapist, specializing in supporting those who got injured by sports. Just Sosuke having Rin parallels yeah.
Astrid, Albert’s guardian. Doesn’t understand what Albert is doing but is trying to be supportive. Much more interested in the stars and the sky and space than any water sports.
