Baby On Baby

TL;DR: I see the appeal but cannot listen to this kind of music for a whole album. I tap out after a few good ones.

Yikes this one is a bit late but in my defense, I was graduating and that took up quite a bit of time. Anyways, I came to the realization that I have listened to like no other genres even though that was the point of this account. As a way to combat this I bring you a review of Baby on Baby.

For the record I do listen to some rap music, but it pretty much only consists of 90s hip hop and Yung Gravy. I haven’t even given new rap a chance so I figured I should give it a fair listen before I say I don’t like it.

General Thoughts

I mean honestly I didn’t hate this. I didn’t expect to but I liked it much more than I thought I would. I could never listen to this for like a full day (I even chunked this album when listening and writing this) but I get the appeal. To me it all just sounds the same but I totally get if someone said the same about rock or kpop.

There are a few songs in this album that stood out as good to me, although none of them were in a row which made listening to this album much more of a chore than the other ones. The opening song “Taking it Out” is one of my favorite of the album and a solid solid start. “Babysitter” makes me feel badass and while “Pony” is not as good as the Ginuwine song it’s still pretty solid. It kinda reminds me of a soundtrack to a DS game I had as a kid (weirdly not the first time I’ve written that on this account). “Tupac” was also really good although the message of it kinda rubs me the wrong way. Maybe don’t call yourself Tupac thanks.

While there were some I liked there were just as much that I hated. “Celebrate”, “Joggers”, and “Best friend” reminded me why I didn’t listen to rap before now. They just seem to drag on even though they’re less than three minutes and are endlessly repetitive. I think I mentioned before that drum machines are extra annoying to me following my concussion and this is kinda what’s happening here. (That’s really stupid of me to say when I listen to kpop but the pretty harmonies usually distract me. There is nothing to distract here.)

Final Verdict

No way I am buying this, not remotely worth it for me. The four songs that I liked I’m going to like on Spotify and that’s about it. I don’t think I’ll be listening to more DaBaby, although I’ll definitely be giving more rappers a chance. I stand behind what I said when I said this was to listen to more genres. Even if that means I won’t like it, at least I’m giving it a chance.

The greatest thing about Taylor and us is that our bond keeps getting stronger and we continue to get closer over the years. She lets us into her life more and more and writes more personally than ever before. Unlike most artists that close themselves off as they get bigger, which is fair because they have the right to do that and I can understand that as well. I’m just feeling so blessed that Taylor trusts us enough to let us so close to her and into her life.
