"WE EXIST SOMEWHERE BETWEEN LIMBO AND PURGATORY"
by Ernest Doty
After dropping out of high school in his hometown of Albuquerque Ernest Doty turned his life around in his early 20s, completely changing his lifestyle and focusing full-time on his art. Now living in Oakland and describing himself as a "mystic and social activist" Doty still has a love of New Mexico and its creativity in the face of numerous social and economic challenges. In 2010 Albuquerque's Historic District Improvement Company and 516 Arts brought him back to town to paint this raven composition off of 2nd St behind the Sunshine Theatre. While incorporating elements of the surreal pop art style so recognizable on the streets of Oakland and beyond, the structure and detail of this fascinating work are also an interesting departure from what I’ve come to expect from Doty. @ernestdoty @516_arts @streetartcities
