Indian Curry Vegetable Meal w/ Vegetarian Strips - Aldi Meatless Monday $2.99

Aldi likes to release a bunch of products all related to the traditional flavors of one area of the world. In the past we've seen them visit Greece, Italy, Mexico and Germany, but right now their latest collection is inspired by the flavors of India.

This isn't Aldi's first collection inspired by India, but it's the first time I've seen it show up with this much variety. They're currently offering curry-based soups, Tikka Masala meal kits, cooking sauces, and various freezer meals. It's been a very VERY long week for me, and even though I like to cook homemade meals on the weekends, I caved and bought a bunch of frozen meals from Aldi instead. (They're vegetarian friendly so I can share them with my boyfriend!)

For today's #MeatlessMonday post, I heated up one of Aldi's frozen vegetarian curry meals for my boyfriend and I. It has something called "vegetarian strips" in it, which look suspiciously like tofu, so we'll see how this one pans out.

We've got some appealing art and yummy food imagery, and the instructions are easy to read. There's really nothing to nit-pick about here. I mean, it looks like a frozen product you'd buy anywhere else, like Trader Joe's, or even Target. My boyfriend, who usually picks on my Aldi obsession, saw the bag and didn't think it was from Aldi at all. Aldi's house brands are stepping things up, and I love it!

The instructions are as easy as they come. Place bag seam-side up in the microwave for 5-6 minutes. I did that, but found after 6 minutes the contents  in the center were still ice cold. The microwave I was using was a little old, so that was likely the issue. I mixed up the contents of the bag with my hands a bit, separated it into two bowls, and microwaved them for another 2 and a half minutes, and everything was nice and hot. The vegetarian strips did NOT look appetizing in my opinion, but Tofu strips are a bit of a hard sell.

Once everything was heated properly, the kitchen smelled like coconut milk, which was pleasant enough, but I took it as a bad sign. We're more of a spicy curry crowd, and this is looking and smelling pretty mild to me.

I took a big bite with the vegetarian strips in it, and the flavoring was just as I expected. Coconut-heavy and mild. The strips are definitely tofu, and they may look like chicken, but they have all the texture of a kitchen sponge. I'm picking on it, but it's not bad. The veggies are refreshing, the rice has decent texture, and the sauce is coconut-y. It's a nice mild freezer meal for people who want to feel like their eating adventurously, while still playing it safe. I personally wouldn't buy it again, since we're more of a spicy brown-curry kind of family, but if you're into more mild and refreshing dishes, this could be perfect for you.

Live G Free Caramel Apple Baked Chewy Bars - Aldi ($4.99)

Remember when I went to NY for SFFS16 in June? Back then I bought a couple snack-bar type products from Aldi to stash in my hotel room. (For snacking and lazy breakfasts.) It was mostly granola and cereal bars, but I bought a box of these on a whim and they were so good I bought a second box when I got back to Jersey! Now I'm buying a third so I can photograph it and share it with the rest of you!

Gluten Free foods carry this stigma of being a diet-product or trend, but for people who have autoimmune disorders like Celiac Disease, they're really helpful, so I like to go out of my way to try some gluten free products here and there. It's always fun to find something yummy that I can share with my family members without having to single out their dietary needs.

Aldi's G-Free line has name brand-passing typefaces, sky blue backdrops, and a few pops of color here and there. I think it's one of their nicest looking product lines, and this box is no exception. It's bright, eye catching, and appealing. Looking' good Aldi!

Inside the box are individually wrapped bars with designs echoing the box-art. When I first saw these I thought they were kind of small, but what they lack in size they make up for in flavor and density.

Unwrapped, the bar smells like caramel apples and oatmeal, but not the fake gross caramel apple, like these Peeps, it's an authentic fruity scent that makes me think of crisp fall mornings.

When you take a bite, the bar is dense and really chewy with little crunchy quinoa-flakes to keep things interesting. It has a rich baked apple flavoring mixed with hints of caramel, cinnamon, but all the satisfaction of a bowl of oatmeal. That all sounds so healthy, but it tastes so decadent! It reminds me of this caramel apple cheesecake I got at Cooper House restaurant last month. It's just so good!

I really like these a lot and I can't recommend them enough. Right now they're my go-to breakfast bar (that I eat in the car on my 45min drive to work each morning) and I keep them in my desk for mid-day snacking. I gave one to my boss' 10-year old daughter, she's my office-buddy, but a very picky eater, and she liked it too! If a kid who hates pizza, French fries, and pretty much everything else likes it, maybe you will too.

Brookie Dough Ice Cream Pint - Aldi

Aldi started offering pints of ice cream that look suspiciously like Ben & Jerry's, and it comes in three flavors: Brookie Dough, Make Fudge Not War, and Thank You Cherry Much...and they were only $1.99 each!?! Naturally I bought all three. First up, Brookie Dough!

What we have here is a pint of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with brownie batter and cookie dough bits mixed in. Hmm, this sounds a lot like Ben & Jerry's Half Baked to me!

As the packaging suggests "Brookie" is a mash-up of the words "brownie" and "cookie."   Aldi has released a few "brookie" items this year and I think they're attempting to make it a popular store-specific product, similar to Trader Joe's Speculoos. Although yummy, the term just isn't catching on. (Sorry Aldi.)

This past year Aldi has released some amazing packaging that blurs the lines between big budget brand name products and no-frills store-brands, but this isn't one of them. This design is gaudy, goofy looking, and pretty ugly. We've got a clip-art looking cartoon sheep, a poor man's version of the simple Ben & Jerry's cow, and some really garish color choices. Purple and neon green? It's like Barney on acid. Visually this is obnoxious, but if the ice cream inside is tasty, it'll all be worth it.

I peeled back the lip and the surface was a lovely swirl of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. No sign of mix-ins yet, and it looks a little chocolate-heavy, but I'm not discouraged.

Time to dig in! I grabbed my spoon and scooped some up, there was a cookie dough clump in my first scoop, so far so good...

The ice cream is decent quality, I'd say it's on-par with classic vanilla and chocolate Ben & Jerry's, and it has a nice mouth feel. Overall, typical vanilla and chocolate, nothing too fancy. The cookie dough nugget was crumbly and sugary, like most cookie dough ice cream mix-ins, and it was really satisfying. My first spoonful didn't blow my mind or anything, but for $1.99, this was good. Damn good!

I tried to dig up a brownie piece next, but that took me a little while. It seems most of my brownie chunks had sunk to the bottom, while cookie chunks stayed closer to the surface. The brownie bits are larger than the cookie ones, and square-ish shaped. They're soft and chocolatey with more of a brownie-batter-feel than a baked brownie, and they were my favorite part! Rich, chocolatey, fudgey goodness! Very yummy. I don't think the brownie pieces are as big as the ones in Ben & Jerry's, but there seems to be a healthy amount of them at the bottom, so I don't mind!

With a pint of Ben & Jerry's Half Baked being almost twice the cost (Ben & Jerrys Half Baked $3.97 at Walmart & $1.99 for Brookie Dough at Aldi), I'd take this any day! I will definitely buy this again, it's a great value for your money and it tastes delicious. If you're dedicated Half Baked fan you might find these smaller mix-ins to be a little unsatisfying, but overall, I think this cheaper alternative is very the way to go. I plan on buying a few pints and stocking up my freezer, you never know when awesome Aldi items like this might disappear!

(Also, I think this ice cream is EVEN BETTER when you top it with chocolate chips. It adds some crunchy texture.)

Chicken Tikka Samosas - Aldi

Having a freezer meal on a work night is a necessity for my weekly survival. I always start out healthy with good food choices and making my own meals from scratch, but after a few days of getting slammed at my day-job and doing all this stuff online after-hours for my clients, various blogs and online shops...I'm on the brink of eating an entire box of banana Twinkies and telling myself it's healthy because bananas are a fruit.  

I do all of my weekly grocery shopping at Aldi, and they have a decent variety of unique frozen entrees that are always changing. Every week it's something new! (Which can be a good or a bad thing. Sometimes you find something you love, but it's only available for a few days, then it disappears forever.) Aldi usually has a theme to it's weekly circular and offerings. Sometimes it's an upcoming holiday, or sporting event, or specific flavor profile (like spicy foods), but they also have this "Around the World" series where it features a bunch of products from a particular location. They've done Italy, Mexico, Germany, and even India. In case you didn't know, Aldi is a European company (more specifically German), so this is a German company, making Indian food, and selling it in America. It sounds like a bad idea, right? Guess again!

Aldi has released a few "Journey to India" products, and they all follow the same design guidelines. The packaging is a faux-textured beige-y color that looks like sandstone, or some kind of aged map, and the logo is bold, colorful, and pretty nicely done, especially for a grocery store branded item at such a low price point. I feel like the top portion of the design is really strong, while the lower half is a bit weak. If they extended that red band all the way to the bottom I think the overall design would be a lot bolder and stronger, plus the typefaces towards the bottom look really modern and stand out against the faux aging of the rest of the package, but really, this is very nicely done. Aldi is stepping up their game! I like this box a lot more than some of the Indian style frozen items I get at their fancier sister-store, Trader Joe's! (That's right! Aldi and Trader Joe's are related, and sometimes they even carry the exact same products, but they're always cheaper at Aldi. Take that snooty name-brand loving foodies who look down at Aldi!)

Enough package talk, I'm hungry! Time to cooke these things up! All I have to do is preheat the oven, line my baking sheet with foil (which is optional, I'm being lazy about cleaning my pans), toss these little triangles inside, and wait for the sauce packet to thaw. Twenty-five minutes later my food was ready and my kitchen smelled like I had just ordered Indian take-out. So far everything is coming out Milhouse awesome.  

I didn't have any cool India-themed dish wear to serve these on, you know, to make it look like I put some effort into my freezer meal supper and did more than just toss something into the oven, so I just used these black sushi-style serving platters I bought at Aldi. (Oh Aldi, I love you so much. Where else can I can buy fruit flavored applesauce, a snow blower, Asian themed dish wear and frozen Indian food all in the same store? You're like Amazon, but yummier. Never ever change!)

Once cooked, the outer layer of the samosa gets really flakey and crisp, and they smell kind of like my usual to-go order of Chicken Tikka Masala from the local Indian take out place. Savory, well spiced, with a hit of roasted onion.

I tried it without the tamarind sauce to see how these tasted on their own first, and they're awesome! The pastry layers are flakey, similar to a fried egg roll wrap, or fried Filo dough (because of the layers), and the inside is filled with a seasoned shredded chicken, bits of white onion, and a slightly spicy sauce. The sauce is very well seasoned, and it's pretty on-par with my take-out order I usually get, but due to all the layered dough it's a little on the dry side. I can see why they gave you a dipping sauce.

With the added tamarind sauce, these are freaking amazing! I already want to run back to Aldi and stock up before they disappear! The sauce has a bit of spice it to as well, but it's also sweet and fruity. (Which makes sense with it being tamarind and all.) When everything is combined, you get the crispy texture of the pastry, sweet sauce, savory chicken and onion, and an added spicy kick at the end. These are maybe a 4/10 on the spicy scale, so me and my sister really liked the little kick of heat and could easily handle it, but my mother (who can't handle spices) couldn't even try these. It satisfies all my cravings and I can easily eat this entire box by myself in one sitting.

This is a really awesome Aldi offering, and I really really hope it comes back, and if it does, I'm stocking up my freezer. If you're like me and you need to rely on freezer goodies to get through the week, and you like Indian spices, you have to try these. I really love them, and they taste way fancier and more interesting than a lot of the other frozen dinner entrees out there. (Trust me, these make you feel much fancier than sad microwave mac & cheese on a Thursday night.)
