Aldric twists in the saddle.
“I understand riding the road with a knight is useful, and I’m happy to keep you from brigands, but riding a hundred feet behind me makes it feel just a touch like you don’t like me.”
Aldric’s jovial nature doesn’t last after the week and nearly 200 miles of riding they’d done. The hundred feet of distance was starting to grate in his nerves.

Jalon started to move, but something was holding her in place, something warm and solid.
Jalon raised her head enough to look around behind her, finding Aldric snuggled up behind her with an arm draped around Jalon's middle. He looked much younger like this, his face unmarred by his concern from the night before. She wanted to run her fingers over his cheek, but she didn't want to wake him.
So she turned to face him, careful not to wake him, and wrapped an arm around his side. She could wait.

Aldric as a young boy walks through the forest, the trees seem to move to allow light to shine on him as he walks through the woods. Nowhere is too dark, and nothing marks his passing. The little forest creatures come when he calls, and the trees bring him snacks.

An intense nightmare that made them wake up in a cold sweat Rain pours over Aldric's head. Riding in the rain is miserable, and his riding cloak was soaked through an hour ago. Lightning flashes, thunder rolls, and a shadow stretches over him. A terrible roar echoes behind him, a thundering of something on the road behind him. The wet of his cloak prevents him from seeing what the beast is, he spurs his horse to a gallop. Lightning cracks again, the thunder drowned out by the beast behind him, another earth shaking roar and the snap of jaws. Aldric sits up, and he still feels the rain. Realizing it is his sweat, he lays back, throws off the blanket, and gets his sword.

Jalon was a mess by the time she returned to the abbey. She managed to fight off the bandits on the way back from her last trip, but gods above and below, she took a beating in the process.
She was too tired to do more than heal the worst injuries, enough to stop most of the bleeding. There were still scrapes and bruises everywhere from the fight.
Running into Aldric on her way to the stables when she was returning the horses and cart was a surprise, and she didn't like that he was seeing her like this. Not that it could be helped. His worried expression made her feel mildly embarrassed to be seen this way.
She smiled tiredly at him, "Don't worry...they're dead."
Barely. There were three, and she used spirit guardians to do most of the work. That didn't mean they couldn't breach the spirit barrier to get to her.

Aldric flushes, he holds one elbow with his other hand and rubs his arm. "Thank you, your Highness, I do... strive... to be good for you" he says, with his ears turning red.
