El Planeta [trailer]
Amidst the devastation of post-crisis Spain, mother and daughter bluff and grift to keep up the lifestyle they think they deserve, bonding over common tragedy and an impending eviction.
Consists of some droll episodes. But you don't really know if you should laugh or cry. The situation is serious. But the two certainly don't make a lot of effort to change it. Which is probably part of the point.
Side note, amused to find out afterwards that the man in the opening scene was played by director Nacho Vigalondo. And that the two women are real-life mother and daughter.

Film after film: El planeta (dir. Amalia Ulman, 2020)
There's something deeply upsetting that I feel when watching films about people being reckless with money to the point of endangering their subsistence. This, of course, stems from my life adventures with two exes, both of which would wipe clean our mutual savings and then rather buy cigarettes instead of food for the last money left. So yeah, I am deeply affected and biased. Real-life daughter and mother Ulman are a mesmerizing on-screen duo in this beautifully filmed dramedy about approaching poverty and keeping up appearances.
