‘Was that because of me?’ Jay heard a whisper behind his back and turned around to see his son looking at him with the big scared eyes. The boy clearly wasn’t used to witness adults fighting. Which was the best thing Jay could wish for him. ‘You fought because of me?’
He shook his head. ‘No, kid. First, we didn’t fight. Second, it was not because of you.’
‘Because of Pegasus then?’ Alec made an hesitant step toward him.
‘No, it wasn’t because of Pegasus either. It was because if me.’
‘Good,’ Alec nodded. Then, realizing how badly it had sounded, corrected himself, ‘I mean I don’t want to be a reason for your fighting with mom.’ He stepped a bit closer. ‘I mean- I wish- I wish you wouldn’t fight at all. I don’t want you hurting mom,’ He fell silent for a moment and then continued, ‘and I don’t want mom hurting you.’ Jay smiled sadly at those words. And then suddenly two small hands wrapped around his shoulders. His son was hugging him for the first time. Ever. He stilled. ‘You know she loves you, right?’ Alec’s whisper was loud in his right ear.
‘I know.’ He gently hugged the boy back.
‘I know what can make her forgive you though. She wants a vacation in Sulani.’ Alec mischievous smile appeared in front of Jay when he opened his eyes. He closed them at some point apparently.
‘We can arrange that,’ he nodded. ‘Thank you for helping me out, kid. I appreciate that more than you will ever know.’

‘Mom, why are you wearing shades when we’re inside? It’s embarrassing!’ They were at the gym and his mother was being foolish.
‘Because I like to imagine we’re in Sulani,’ she answered dreamily.
‘I’m sorry but this is the last time I’m coming here with you.’ There was no son love that could overcome this kind of embarrassment. ‘Jay’s gonna be my only gym-partner from now on.’
‘Jay’s not embarrassing?’ she asked, smiling at him.
‘Nah, Jay’s cool!’ he blurted before realizing he had just complemented the guy he officially didn’t love. ‘Er… I mean, he’s not embarrassing and that’s cool.’
