OHHHH ALEX okay wait wait wait I gotta think....we know literally nothing about derek outside of the fact he drove a motorcycle and looked like buck and was in an accident on that motorcycle that basically killed him, so as similar to buck as he may be different. but maybe his irish wolfhound was a reddish color to blend in with the sand, whereas bailey (buck's wolfhound) is the darker gray with copper undertones. just a flash of copper, and that's enough for bonnie.
but imagine: derek who is loved by his mother versus buck who was found lacking. derek who was allowed to take up space and roam in the desert with an irish wolfhound daemon who was big enough to roam with him versus buck who took up space with an irish wolfhound daemon because he wants to be seen. derek's wolfhound dissipating into dust when his brain dies versus bailey who is still by his side. derek's wolfhound who used to flop across bonnie's legs on the couch, tongue lolling versus bailey who bares her teeth and growls because buck is hers, not bonnie's. and maybe. maybe if bonnie can't have buck, if she can't have derek's daemon to try and coax him back, then she must have buck's. she will do anything for buck's. am I implying she tries to separate them so she can keep bailey? sure am!! (and I think this is how the others died; forced separation. none of them survived. oh well. onto the next one. next time it'll work, she's sure of it. next time for sure. the one who's meant to stay will survive.)
(but then there is eddie's daemon, sniffing around the property while he tries to find the owners. there is eddie's daemon finding buck before guns are drawn. there is bailey knocking bonnie to the ground and eddie's daemon wrenching the rifle from earl's hands and eddie catching buck before he can fall this time as the sheriff rolls in and all the pieces fall into place)
