In the USSR in 1937, a newly appointed prosecutor discovers an undestroyed letter from a prisoner that reveals corruption in the secret police, the NKVD. His search for the truth becomes dangerous.

Bleak, Kafkaesk parable that's still a compelling watch.

Kornev is naive and idealistic. Even if you don't know history, it's clear that he will inevitably get crushed by the system.

The film has a historical setting. But it could just as well take place today. Nothing really changed in Russia. Today, opposition politicians and journalists get murdered, the internet gets walled off. The slightest dissent gets severely punished.
