Aveline stared at the computer screen in front of her. The receptionist was saying something, but Avie couldn’t hear. Even her vision was blurring at the edges, turning everything into rushing water except the first name on the schedule for today:

Alessandro Di Natale. Bloody fucking hell.

What were the chances there were more than one person with that name in the tri-state area? Had Aless ever mentioned Salem? No, but he hadn’t mentioned anything about his life, really. This was not the first time she wished he had, but it was the first time it had been for selfish reasons. 

The bell above the door jingled, which was usually one of Avie’s favourite sounds. She loved her job. The animals, anyway. Their owners, she could take or leave. But this one... steeling herself, she smiled at her poor ignored receptionist, and stood up. “Go on your break,” she whispered, despite it literally being 9am. She didn’t want to have witnesses to what she might say to the man who’d just walked in with his cat.
