Moi, en chantant “Belle” : ... avant de vous av-ouère menée jusqu’à l’autel
Oooops... Désolée Patrick Fiori !
I’ve always wondered what was up with the American versions of the Harry Potter books (especially considering the difference in the titles of the first book), and now I’ve discovered, among other things, that words have been replaced. Words like “shan’t”, “dressing gown”, “jumper”, and “football” become “won’t”, “bathrobe”, “sweater”, and “soccer”, and those are just the ones I’ve noticed (it’s been a while since I’ve read those books, especially in English, having read last year the first one in Italian for practice).
I don’t really understand the necessity of these replacements. While most of the replaced words are perhaps more local expressions that certainly were not used here, I’ve never really had any problems with a kid. And now I’m wondering if other books have similar treatment.
My problem though is with my local library, who has the American version of the audiobook. We’ve always shared the same editions as the UK, so I don’t know why it has these? Especially if I have to continuously hear these words (especially soccer, sweater, and the likes) said in a British accent.
I just got so pissed off at Spotify for putting an ad between “Little Lottie/The Mirror” and “The Phantom of the Opera” ...... I MEAN you cannot have anything but that intro follow Michael Crawford’s eerie voice!!
My internet is being annoying this evening... Well I’ll post my sketches (yesterday’s and today’s) sometime tomorrow.
So, annoyed, I scrolled through a few of the top posts and noticed that Miraculous Ladybug is apparently quite popular on the platform these days. Being deprived of the new episodes for a couple of months just reinforces my need to stay off my dashboard (and most of tumblr in fact) as I’ve been so good at doing!
It always amazes me how in works of fiction, a character will look at a piece of foreign text, go “It’s in [insert language here]”, then proceed to translate it seamlessly in English (or in whatever language I’m reading).
Whenever I’ve been presented with such an opportunity, I at least spend a good half a minute trying to find translations, and if I’m lucky enough to find any, they are either inadequate or I trip up on the syntax. And this isn’t even when I’m trying to translate from a language I’ve learned as an adult and of which I therefore only have moderate understanding. This happens when I’m trying to translate from one native tongue to another.
Educating my friend about my latest obession...
My friend, as she goes through my sketchbook: Do they have names?
Me: Yup. That's Enjolras, Courfeyrac, and Combeferre.
My friend: Did you make up those names?
Me: Nope, they're all characters from Les Misérables. Actually like the last ... ten sketches are characters from that book. That's Grantaire and Enjolras. And that's Jehan and Montparnasse. ... and more Jehan and Montparnasse...
My friend: So is that a scene from the book?
Me: No, it's something I came up with...
My friend: Ooo, is that why they wear modern clothing?
Me: Yeah it's like a modern alternative universe....
My friend, giving me a strange look: ....
Me: Yeah, I'm a little obsessed...
