Sadly, it's not the 1974 First Edition, which would be worth upwards of $10,000. Instead, it's the 1990 reprint, which would still fetch a good price if I were interested in selling it, which I'm not. Pretty good for a $0.25 purchase.
In the 1990s Doubleday reprinted their hardcover editions of Stephen King's early novels when he changed publishers, either as an attempt to honour their departing author or as a last-ditch attempt to wring some money out of his fans. Or, probably, for both reasons. I've always preferred the early editions of King's to the later ones (there's something about the 1970s and 1980s graphic design of his early Doubleday hardcovers and Signet paperbacks that for me distills the essence of the author; also, nostalgia has a strong effect as those are the editions I first read).
Alex Gotfryd was the Art Director for Doubleday books when Carrie was first published. When he died in 1991, the New York Times obituary noted that Gotfryd
"may have designed more book jackets than any individual in modern publishing history," said the Doubleday president and publisher, Stephen Rubin. He oversaw the jacket direction of some of the biggest best sellers of the last three decades, including "The Agony and the Ecstasy," "Airport," "Jaws" and "Roots."
