Alexander Mackendrick - Sweet Smell of Success (1957) Mackendrick was already known for his British Ealing Studios dark comedies, such as Whiskey Galore and the astonishingly dark The Ladykillers. Now he goes to the States to make a movie, one which is really a huge flop at the time but that now feels extremely fresh, vicious and with a complete "take no prisoners" attitude. Starring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster, both playing against-type as pretty horrible characters, the film was not very well received when it came out as fans of the actors were kind of repelled by what they were seeing on screen. Tony Curtis in particular was a heartthrob pretty boy and here he comes across as an amoral, greedy little shit in what is also probably his best role. This film is mean, there are no heroes here, only manipulators, set as it is in the world of the press and press agents, Lancaster plays a powerful columnist and Curtis is a press agent trying to get his clients featured on the column. The film has everything, from an incestuously tinged relationship to attempted suicide, beatings, depraved indifference to human life and also astonishing cinematography filmed on location and some of the sharpest most amazing dialogue ever put on screen. If you want to despair for humanity this is the film to watch, the acting, direction and writing are pretty much flawless, a masterpiece. Tributaries
It seems simple (or simplistic) to assume that mimicking another’s easily recognizable quirks is of course a mockery. It is likely, or at least possible, that the parody is a tribute.
High Anxiety, homage or spoof? The send-ups of Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, are all over the top, of course. Mel Brooks is clearly piling on the Alfred…
