Cough Syrup and Fever Dreams #2
I had a dream the other night. There was a man named Joseph and he sat alone by the window of a sad looking apartment. A drizzle beat steadily onto the pavement below him, and as the rain fell its droplets made patterns across the glass. As he sat he thought to himself that he could sit there forever, and that he would sit there forever, just to decipher what meaning the rain has blessed him with.
‘There must be something in this window’, he thought, a reason for the life he had been living up until then. He’d be damned if he let it slip by with this weather.
A queer thought would intrude on him every now and again, and it would suggest that the weather was not a metaphor for his mental health, and that the pattern on the glass was limpid, in that, there was none. He didn’t care much for that thought.
It had become night, and all I had done was watch this man sit and stare as the drizzle continued to beat steadily. When the streetlamps came on, and their light pierced the window and painted yet another pattern on the walls of his room, a firefly came in. It did not come through the window because that window was closed, rather, it slipped in from under his apartment door.
It flew up to him, and sat on his shoulder as he watched the rain fall, and it spoke into his ear.
‘I watched you from the window,’ it said, ‘why were you here all day?’
Joseph was silent a while, then answered, ‘Because there’s a pattern in this glass, and I’m trying to figure it out’
‘Why?’ it asked.
‘Well,’ Joseph said, ‘because then I’ll know. It’ll help me you see’.
‘Help with? And what’ll you know?’
“Well,” Joseph said, “I’m very sad, and my life rarely ever goes the way I’d like it to, so I’m trying to figure out why’.
“And the answer is in this glass?”
Joseph did not answer him. Instead, he kept his eyes out the window, pass the pane of glass, and saw the empty street below him. There were no cars out on the road, and no one walked there either. It hardly seemed like anyone else was alive. Joseph was alone in his little, depressing apartment, with nothing but a firefly and two patterns to try to discern.
The sky felt very close to him. If he stretched his body out the window, and raised his hand he thought he might’ve caught a thunder cloud.
‘So, is it?’ the Firefly asked again.
Joseph did not care much for the inquisitive little bug, but he answered him regardless.
“No it is not”, he acquiesced.
He did not speak after, so the firefly continued, “So where is it?”
Joseph felt an urge to squash the thing, but steadied himself.
“I do not know”, he answered.
“I didn’t expect you to’, the firefly said.
Neither spoke then.
Joseph looked again at the streets below him. He wished to see another person so badly, yet, no one was there. He was one forlorn star, sent to shine in an apathetic night. His light, so small and far away, could never vanquish the darkness.
‘You need to be less pathetic,’ the firefly said with a sigh, ‘you choose these things for yourself. This life you live is your own. No one else is responsible for it. So now I’ll ask again, why were you here all day?’
Joseph bit his bottom lip and said, ‘Because living is scary, and I feel alone. No one will ever be me, and I can never be anyone else. It is easier to dream than to think. It is easier to decipher meaning in something that is meaningless, than to give meaning to something without any. Life is not as simple as the most complex things my mind can concoct, and that scares me’.
‘Good,’ the firefly said, ‘at least you know’.
Joseph waited then, for some comfort to be parted from this bug.
But none came.

Moral of the story is that Fireflies are dicks. Correction from my last post: not to the 3 people, but rather the one person that reads these, who I know personally, thank you.
